Top choice, our-Popz unknowingly put me onto that album.
Yep it not bad! Found it in my YooToob watch later list, then went and got a proper copy off iTunes.

The Selecter "Too Much Pressure" 1979 Two-Tone vinyl LP.
Infectious beats and a great bass and drum sound, which combined with Neol Davies choppy guitar makes for a great riddim.

That was nearly forty years ago and still, de wickid reign.

Daft punk discovery on vinyl. First side is unplayable unfortunately as it is pressed so far off centre that it wows like a bugger  . Rest of the sides are fine though...
Brilliant underrated record

Just catching up on BBC Prom 65 - Stax records celebration, with Jools Holland's orchestra as the "house band" in an old fashioned '60s soul revue style collection of sheer fabness.
Steve Cropper and Booker T Jones are ensconced in Jools' orchestra giving it welly behind William Bell, Sam Moore, and Eddie Floyd.
Tom Jones, Beverley Knight, James Morrison and Ruby Turner are the Brit contingent joining the fun.

Great stuff and excellent sound quality.
Jools Holland and his band, plus a load of old groovers kicking butt and having a great time.
What more could an old soul fan ask for on a Sunday. 8)

Ruby did the Hull freedom festival last year, she was even more awesome.....talk about work the audience....this year we've got Kofi Annan, he talks the talk but he can't sing like Ruby.

Aye,
Ruby is the biz and Beverley Knight was surprisingly good. The company she was in certainly made her step up her vocal performance by several notches.
Tom? .... say no more. 8)

Back to live music for a moment: Cultural overload weekend...

...last night it was Marlis Petersen, who I haven't heard for some time - forgot what a beautiful tone she has - http://dcc.ae/event/marlis-petersen/ - lovely venue, quite exquisite and great acoustics. Programme was lieder; first half all French (Martini,Faure,DuparcPoulenc etc.), second was all Richard Strauss. Lieder is not normally my thing (I don't speak German), but when explained it can be beautiful - all uplifting stuff - none of the normal Germanic depressing "my love has abandoned me so I'm going into the forest to die" type thing...

Tonight it's Dubai Opera, a fantastic, small & intimate, new opera house in a specially commissioned production of Don Giovanni from Teatro di San Carlo (Naples).
