The Best of Stan Freberg.

Comic genius.
Like most comedy produced by geniuses, such as Freberg or Spike Milligan, some of it doesn't quite work, or in the case of Freberg doesn't translate to British ears; but his satirical lampoons of recording studio politics and "musical differences" are just plain funny and you don't have to be American to get them.

"Banana Boat Song" (Too loud man)
"Yellow Rose of Texas" with the out of hand session drummer drowning the piccolos.
"Heartbreak Hotel" (That's too much echo man)
"Rock Island Line" with the producer telling "Lonnie Donegan" in no uncertain terms to cut out the narrative and get on with the song. ( Git 'yer chicken at the station? what the hell's that mean?..No no...ticket at the station, well c'mon man sing clearly and get on with the song willya!)
and "The Great Pretender" with the "jazz" session pianist and drummer becoming sick of playing the same note and beat over and over and breaking into improvised rhythms, much to the lead singer's annoyance.

My dad had a fair few of Freberg's records, along with with Spike Jones and the City Slickers as well as The Goons.
Fond memories of listening to these records in the early 60s, with dad and me in stitches and mum with a face like a smacked arse, which of course ended up making the whole thing even funnier :)

Pat Metheny Group "The Road to You" recorded live in Europe.

I really must see Pat live before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Pat Metheny again,

"A Map of the World" Music - (From and Inspired By the Motion Picture)

Pat on acoustic guitar, in pastoral mood as in "Beyond the Missouri Sky" but with strings, giving a classical feel to the whole thing.

Wide open autumnal spaces, simultaneously melancholy and uplifting. Fabulous!

Not bad Steve. :)

youngbloods: darkness darkness from elephant mountain

I wasn't aware of the youngbloods until an hour ago....only missed the boat by 50 years.

Robert Plant does a good cover but I'd never heard the original..RP's version not quite so awesome now.

Not played this in an age - thanks for the nudge, Ed.
I might be playing some of Pat Metheny's works later, so thanks for that nudge, Steve.

Now somehow that's quite a list with which I have some empathy. With tales of topography it might be better to time how long you can take it before you run over the hills screaming...the effect won't be long lasting just real at the time. Then, go back to Rory Gallagher and draw strength from his vital energy! ELP is too much for me, far too much- why did they do it!?
