It does rather look that way, doesn't it? But no, most certainly not, though I suspect the setting and chairs etc. are used for many events - the hotel is stupidly sumptuous to say the least - they let the concert committee have the Royal Ballroom function suite (the one in the photo) at a reduced rate, but generally in Dubai some sponsor will just pick up the bill.

As an intimate venue, it's perfect for choral or small recitals - been to a few events here now, and every one has been excellent. Normally there are about 200 (or less) in the audience, so it cannot be economically justified - to ship in the type of world-class performers we get, put them up in these hotels etc. (they don't do "economy"), just doesn't add up - sponsors pay for it all.

Tickets are about 60 quid, so not cheap, but worth every penny and more.

After a couple of weeks wandering our way to Palermo there is live music in one if the big squares. The P.A. system is fabulous! Relatively small, the sound 100 metres from the stage is fabulously clear and still at the cusp of uncomfortably loud.

Afro Celt Music - nice enough

A quarter of a mile away we could only just hear it and then none at all. Amazing!

IMHO, not a lot - it's all very weird! Each to their own, though...

The opera was... different. Don G. is one of those that really needs a BIG sound - the final act is highly dramatic and you need the audience to get totally lost in the wonder of it all - the score is incredible - the productions I've seen before have either been major ones in London (Colosseum/ENO, Royal Opera) or decent local companies like Kent Opera.

The production was OK but technically flawed - the company were doing three Mozart operas on three consecutive nights - The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi Fan Tuti and Don Giovanni. The sets were shared and, as a colleague told me, so were many of the costumes. Makes sense.

Couldn't go to CFT as that was Friday (same night as the lieder recital), so ended up just going to Don G.

Basically, Don G. requires top vocalists and the ones on hand were good enough, but not great and lacked power; the orchestra, whilst technically good, lacked passion and depth - there really needed to be twice as many of them, if only for impact.

However, we got a deal where we got a three course meal in a top bistro plus a ticket for the opera for about 40 quid all-in eachhttps://www.facebook.com/seanconnollyatdubaiopera/ - a couple of good bottles of Croz Hermitage set us up nicely.

Embedded flash videos not working... I get a bogus view on thread as well - but with a blue box saying 'watch on Youtube ?' or something of that nature.
