Dual EDS 1000 and airprodigy linear arm build
#76 Re: Dual EDS 1000 and airprodigy linear arm build
Forgot to say that I think I'm as guilty as anyone of overlooking mm carts. I had a Shure V15 for years and absolutely loved it but then I discovered the Supex SD900 and that did things that I didn't think the V15 did - in hindsight it was the deck that limited the Shure not the cartridge difference - I had the Shure running with a Connoisseur BD1 on a diy melamine coated chipboard plinth and that limited its bottom end and ability to exceed at tune playing... The Supex was on a big Denon DD - no wonder it trounced the V15 for rhythm and bass extension and timing...
"5 in the living room" then I could keep the TT-71 and put a diy arm on it with my Ortofon M20E Super.......

Got the decks cleared of work last night, so ive been enjoying abit of music on it today, rather than just the odd song for the first time in a week. Note to self: Must go through my emails, im sure ive missed some
Like it more every time its used.
And got a badge made for it, the seal of approval.
Next thing, work on something else. I know when to leave well alone

Exactly like that

Reassuring when you still like it a week later

Some sort of component failure on the deck today, an odd one.
It just ground to a halt while playing, but switching it off then on again cured it.....
Thought it was the fuse at first, obviously not if it can be switched back on.
There were a few thumps through the speaker before it died, as if the on off switch was being toggled.
Ive got a few more of the same switches so it can be changed, but im not sure why a switch should suddenly and intermittently fail.
If it was a failure on the motor control board i wouldnt have thought switching it off and on again would make any difference, if its broken its broken.
Any ideas?

It may be an intermittent fault like a dry joint that is just starting to fail or a hairline crack in the pcb - was anything happening that might physically disturb the deck when it failed?

Nope, it was just running as normal

It can be very frustrating Ant.
I've got a new PCB for my Pre3 preamp cos I can't find what I think is an intermittent fault.

Ill just have to keep trying to provoke it into doing it.
Theres no wonky speed to go with it, its seems to be a straight power shut off. I wonder if its a diode going bad, why it should clear by switching off and on again is whats confusing, if it was a modern motor id be looking at something going into thermal shutdown

Ok so i left it running on its own without playing anything and it ran perfectly for about an hour and a half, then died, then switching on and off again spun it back up.
Im perplexed. If its a heat issue, it couldnt possibly have cooled enough to start straight back up a few seconds later, same with a dry joint, or a pcb crack, the temp causing the joint to break couldnt have dropped back quickly enough to allow it.
dodgy caps? No wonky speed though...
There isnt any heat coming off the box with the mains tx ect in it, thats stone cold.
The motor is also stone cold.
Taking the top off the box and testing the ac side shows 20v coming out of the transformer, no issues with the switch of fuse, so the problem is on the motor board.
I did see some wierd ac voltages on the transformer end with the transformer switched off, the other end if those wires are the diodes.
Im leaning towards those being the initial place to start looking .

Oh well. Its now broken completely, whatever was failing has now completely failed. just gives a little twitch when power is applied. Havent touched it, just switched it on just to see.
Havent the time or patience at the moment to look at fixing it
That was short lived, back to lencos then.
