'Noir' HPA
#1 'Noir' HPA
I've found myself spending more time at my desk recently so I decided it was time to get a decent headphone amp so I could enjoy good music whilst working. I chose to build the 'Noir' HPA, buying the PCB from the DIY Audio Store, here are the relevant links;

https://diyaudiostore.com/collections/h ... -amplifier
This evening I finished my Noir build and have chalked up my first hour of listening to it. First impressions are already very positive; everything seems well balanced, excellent detail and, seemingly 'fast'! So far listening has just been using some cheap headphones and source has been FLAC files played on my tiny portable DAC music player but tomorrow I'll plug in my DSC2 DSD decoder and my BeyerDynamic DT880 'phones.
I didn't follow the standard build. I flipped the board 180deg and included a Noble volume pot and RCA sockets on the back panel and also moved the headphone socket and switch to the rear - that's left me with a nice clean front panel to which I applied a little LED bling.
Pretty shoddy if I say so myself!
So after my failure to complete for so long that's two projects done in the past few weeks, this and my DSD decoder. Working on my 6C33C amp tomorrow!

Oi! Oi! Oi! Not so fast!
Mornington Crescent! Under the Cleckheaton Rulings of 1927 (subsection 3 para graph 8 (amended 2019)) you can't just go 'self-shoddy-ing' a good project. A 3rd party has to declare the acquired state of shoddy has been attained.

I still think this coming year will see a return to 640nm as the fashionable colour.

No, definitely red. Red goes at least down to 620nm.The above looks wrong on many counts. 800nm is invisible. Sodium D-line ( low-pressure sodium ) is 589 & definitely orange. 490nm is definitely in the blue. green doesn't end at 530nm, the standard 'green' line is considered to be 546nm mercury. Hope nobody uses this for an exam, or anything important !

Blue is nice, green is OK, don't like red.

Funnily enough I was planning to use red LEDs but I seem to have misplaced them! I may still get some and swap them in for the blue ones as I think they're a bit more subtle.

Mood lighting!
Or multicolour ones that change colour, Ali brought a little Chinese SE EL84 amp to Owston that did that, the ring around the knob changed colour.

Really very good - very easy to listen too. It gives a nice rich, weighty presentation against a nice black background, excellent separation of the musical strands and lots of detail - as I say, very easy to enjoy.
No technicolor knob though
