#1 system failure

Post by ed »

oh waily waily...

yesterday I had an upset whereby the right channel on my music room set up started to sound like sandpaper....
this was pi into usb dac into tpa3116 class d into mark audio monitors

I switched everything off and replaced the pi and dac with a zen micro player

everything sounded good but I only listened for 5 minutes and switched everything off thinking Pi or dac had failed

this afternoon connected pi and dac back in and everything sounded ok....for about an hour..and then the sandpaper came back

mmmmm...trixy...

took the tweeter out of the right hand speaker...still sandpaper from the markaudio
took the markaudio out of the right hand speaker...still sandpaper from the tweeter

took the tpa3116 class d out and put the 2A3 in....bliss

so far so good after 1 hour, so it looks like I have a dead tpa3116 classd

I know I'm wasting my time but I've got the tpa3116 on the bench with the sig gen and scope....we'll see! I'm a bit dissappointed if this proves to be the culprit cos this was the best class d I've had, and it was ace with the electrostatics.

oh waily waily

That's odd, cos the TPA3116 amp I used with my ESL57s (when I had them) would keep cutting out. :?

But seriously, seems like a thermal thing going wrong to me, if it takes an hour to show up. Could be a chip going down. :(

there are no chips inside these things unless you consider the tpa3116 itself. It's just the tpa/tda3116 chip plus lots of chokes and lots of capacitors.. that's it!

anyway there was room in the bin for it.

I see there are still some originals available at £18. It has the orange/yellow board with 15 large caps and a number of smd caps which was deemed the best of the variations back in the day. It has the necessary mute/power switch which is a must if you're using it with electrostatics.

If the new one lasts as long as the old one(5 years) then I don't suppose I'll complain at £18....It really was shockingly good sq for the money.

Bet you will :-)

I may be a bit slow but I'd like to see some indication of a bizarre gardening accident.
