#1 DIY grounding box.
I'd like to make one and see if it has any effect.
Can anyone suggest what material to fill the box with ?
All sorts of crystals have been suggested, but some are quite expensive in bulk.

What's the objective? Vibration damping? If so, under what?

What you do is put a load of pixie dust in a box along with some rocking horse droppings, blend together powdered adamantium and gundanium along with the tears of a unicorn.
Once blended, these form a substance similar to gold stolen from a leprechaun.
Into this you need to mix the urine of a Tibetan monk who has achieved spiritual enlightenment (this is important), the ashes of 1000 pounds in ten pound notes burned in the fire of a phoenix, half a pound of rowntrees jelly, and a pint of stella.
This needs to be sun dried in the atacama desert for 10 years and 13 hours precisely.
Put the resulting compound into a wooden box, add a folded piece of silver foil off a piece of chewing gum soldered to an earth post, and then connect the most expensive piece of bell wire in the world to the post. This needs a phono plug on the end of it to be plugged into a spare socket.
The intedimensional properties of the mix in the box and the chewing gum wrapper, plus the superposition of the atoms within will transform your listening experience.
Of course your mileage may vary
On a serious note, one of these things may do something to the sound, but Im struggling to see what that might be, and what the mechanism might be that makes it do something

I am agnostic about all this, but I do find it funny that the firsts post about making one is asking what goes into it.

Add a magnesium ribbon fuse and whoosh! Plenty of sparks and molten iron.

Same here Ant, that's why I'd like to DIY one.
Perhaps our very own hi-fi dealer in Huddersfield can get hold of one for the next Yorkshire hi-fi club meeting ?

Even those who have DIY'd them seem reluctant to divulge their secret recipe.
A mix of several different types of crystal was what one chap used.

I asked him, he sells the CAD one and never has any on the shelf, I think they sell as soon as they are in stock, or he only stocks them for each order. Best ask him.

Since the 'grounding cable' seems to make such a difference too, I wonder if any of these recent 'converts' ever tried a shorting plug in each unused phono socket on the back of their amps? It was one of Jimmy Hughes' tweaks and I remember first trying it on my Meridian 207 CD player/preamp. I *thought* I heard a subtle improvement but it was long forgotten, almost along with the player to be honest and it was only this afternoon I remembered.
Also confused about comments regarding tying up the ground planes (unless I have it wrong). If all these cables are connected to an amplifier, doesn't said amp have a solid ground plane inside? or is the idea to connect all the source and amp grounds together in one place?

A ground plain may not be what you think it is. I think you may mean a star earth or similar.

This is what I have found. No idea if it will work but I have the bits enroute for a total of £20.
Good luck

An interesting combination of filling material Oliver.
I look forward to your views on the result.

Making a mains cable with only the earth wired to the plug using a decent shielded and screened cable with the other end terminated with whatever connector you need seems to work.
Much cheaper than grounding boxes.
