#1 Latest open baffles

Post by steve s »

I started these back last May, just about had finished them by the end of june but they went on hold until the week before Christmas, just finished them tonight and they are sounding very nice after moving then to the lounge

Theres the usual 18" bass driver, then a top of the range vintage fane 12" then the beyma tpl150 (this time without the front horn ) brings the efficency in line with the other drivers (around 100db) topped of with the fostex t500 only just making its presence heard.
Im very pleased with how they sound- very dynamic and real (in my view), lesley is pleased with how they look which makes things easier as they are a fair size, but nothing like some of my creations
They may not look like open baffles and maybe 'open ducted' would be a better description, im very pleased with the bass output, the back wave fires upwards theres quite a pumping action from it even from the quite a large cross sections there no colouration compared to my more normal open baffles,

Next job is to build a second px25 amp for the lounge, im going to try a cap coupled choke loaded, again with multiple power supplies. i'll see how a breadboard compares with the pesent 'lump' before i start any woodwork
If you click on the pics they turn the right way, well they do on my ipad

The tube manual is quite like a telephone book. The number of it perfect. It is useful to make it possible to speak with a girl. But we can't see her beautiful face from the telephone number

They look good Steve.

Will they be at the next Owston ?

I'll will see phil, i may have built some more by then
Talking about owston i will have to get something organised, the pub has changed hands again i will be having a farewell meeting there in a few weeks, I'll see what dates are available
The speakers are a very good combination of compromises... one of my best

In terms of looks, those are the best speakers you've built since I've known you Steve.
Presumably they are the best sounding ones too? :)

Owston should be interesting this year, Fab looking baffles, funny, squat little up-firing pyramid speakers, teardrop shaped Lencos, Thomas's trolley, lots of specialist music. And surely some Doc modded speakers from someone. What's not to like. :D

They are in there Mark, the pics below show them without the beyma and fostec mounted before christmas

They are extremely well damped inside, the 18" driver is rolled around 200 Hz, the 12" driver goes pretty high but the back wave is damped to try and remove the higher frequencies which seem to work well, the bass is a slight improvement on the white baffles you heard at our last meet, ... there is a 15" driver less in these so a good result do get the same sound quality
Again clic on the pic and they turn the right way...

Interesting - good effort !
So have you done anything different with the 18" then ?
I know after you confirmed the driver type from Owston last time I went away and modelled it on an OB and confirmed what Nick had suggested, that it was about 6db or a bit more down at 40Hz compared to 100Hz if it was driven 'straight' without any EQ. Is there some sort of short tube on the front there & has that done anything to bring up the low bass ?

Is that some sort of Goodmans twin-cone 12" on there ? - looks interesting.

Sorry for the late reply mark, for someone who is on the run down to retirement i seem to be rather busy...

The baffles at Owston had an 18, 15 and a 12 together with the 15 going higher and the 12 higher still,

This speaker has an 18 and a 12 only, the 12 is a rare model fane driver with a very big magnet, it a little more efficient than the beyma tpl's, and sounds good to me..?
The 12 and 18 are in an elongated H frame there is short 'duct' at the front and a longer duct if that makes sense at the back
Its very well damped to keep the output smooth and they both point upwards at the rear, that means the speakers can go up against the wall with out any rear refection issues and the effect of any duct is it gives some directionality. Which is a good thing for any open baffle as it helps cancellation,
At this point i still need to do some proper measurements, but i can say the bass is just slightly better than the big baffles you have heard, which is a result in my books, and considering there is a 15" driver less.
Cheers..

Hey Steve,

I've actually got a pair of HH Acoustics 12" dual-cone speakers that look very similar to your Fane drivers. Got them in a 2x12" guitar cab, but haven't used them much. They did sound very good with music played through.

I'd quite like to clear some space, would you be interested in buying them?
No worries if not, just a thought.

All the best,
Chris
