Way, WAY too tidy.

Today marked the completion of the two attenuator circuit boards, except the inter-board connections which will be soldered into place when I've done the input selection boards, and the four can be stacked together in the final configuration.

However I discovered that the tops of the two electrolytic caps in the relay control section are too close to the corresponding solder connections on the circuit board above when stacked, such that there's a danger of them shorting out - I had thought 1.5mm clearance would be enough but I don't think it is.

There is a Nichicon 470uF / 10V cap available in a 9mm high case rather than 11.5mm but seemingly not from the usual UK sellers - so today I ordered some from Mouser along with a pair of 250VA 12V toroids that I'll need for the Beast power amp - thereby avoiding getting hammered for shipping.

Should hopefully turn up Thursday or Friday.

Big thanks to Ant (Cressy Jr) for helping me out today with the drilling and cutting of a piece of 60mm x 30mm aluminium angle, onto which the transformers are vertically mounted.

BTW Ant remember we found that the transformer bolt was M5 when the spec sheet said it was M4? Turns out the other two transformers had M4 bolts! So identical VA rating and size, but one had a bigger fixing bolt - go figure. Lucky we picked out that one for testing.

Ha! Good job I put an m5 thread on the 4.5mm holes rather than redrilling them, at least they shouldnt be too loose for the m4 bolts to go through and still fit fairly snugly  :D

Yep, everything slotted in just fine.

Of more concern is the fact I've not left a whole lot of room to run the wires for the primaries up to the mains socket, switch and SSR (solid state relay). I'll likely have to join the two ends of the two 115V primaries together near each transformer and shrink-wrap it (to make the required 230V primary), that way I'll only have half the wiring to accommodate down the side.

So I mentioned casually to Meredith that because of this, it would be more tricky to convert to US voltage in the future, which kicked off a 20 minute rant about how we're never going back to America whilst Trump is president etc etc etc. I guess I don't need to worry about that then!

So, hoping to move back in Q1, '18 then?

Ha! hope springs eternal. I'm not placing any bets either way. Tell you what, I'll be bloody pissed off if the world ends in a thermonuclear apocalypse before I've had a chance to get these things finished.

Yeh. Finish amp first. thermonuclear apocalypse later - Important to get your priorities right :)

(cute that you differentiated in that this is probably going to be thermonuclear, not the plain boring vanilla nuclear stuff...)

Well the AMB website has been offline since Monday morning :x - that's where all the docs and instructions for building the boards and interfacing them all together resides.

I've managed to complete the attenuator / selector boards with the exception of the inter-board connections and jumper settings as I need to refer to the documentation for those. There is one circuit board left to do, and again I want to read the docs before I start on it.

This is very irritating, I bloody hope the site comes back soon - I've sunk hundreds of pounds into this and having the documentation unexpectedly yanked effectively stops my build from meaningfully progressing. And yes, I've tried to get a cached version and failed.

That's very frustrating for you Dave. Sounds like an ISP problem that will hopefully be resolved soon. Perhaps the link posted on DIYAudio has what you need?

Brilliant! Thanks Simon - I'd actually posted yesterday in the general discussion section asking whether anyone knew what was going on - that answers my question. At least I know the issue's known about and being looked at.
