I don't think this is going to get done by the end of the year. We're going away for the Xmas week and I've been banned from bringing my soldering iron with me.
Anyways... here is tonight's progress. Linking the anodes of each pair (pin 6 unused) with the G2 stopper resistors (5W Kiwames).

I can't believe you didn't put everything on hold so you could order the wire in a second colour. Your standards are slipping!Thermionic Idler wrote: ↑Sun Dec 02, 2018 10:19 pm It would have made my life a lot easier if I'd bought two different colours of AWG18! Continuity tester to the rescue...

I remember being mildly scolded or bringing Airfix kits on holiday once when I was a kid, like the holiday was supposed to be a break from all that sort of stuff. What? No gotta have my Airfix fix! Are you mad?

Last progress of the year tonight, I won't get a chance to do any more before Xmas and New Year. Spot the difference...
Answer: B- connections between fuses and negative bank cathodes, and anode to tag board links.
Next challenge is going to be the grid stoppers as I have to extend the leads a bit - if the resistors are soldered close to the valve pins (as best practice dictates) the leads are a bit too short to reach to the corresponding tag board connection point. I guess that explains the number of these that I've seen built with an inch or more of lead between the pin and grid stopper.

No, they're not finished. I was hoping though, by the end of tonight, that I'd have been able to get all of the panels bolted together on both of them so that I'd have an idea of what they'd look like when finished, as a sort of proof of concept.
Despite hours of bolting on bolts, this is as far as I've got with one of them, and the base panels aren't on yet. But at least I can see what they will look like.
What hasn't helped is finding out I'm short of about 10 or so 8mm M3 bolts, I think my supplier screwed up the order. I may also need to re-think some of the other fastenings as the bolts have ended up not going far enough into their corresponding holes for my liking - will probably need some longer ones as a result of that.
Probably won't be much more to report after this for a bit, as I have to get everything packed up in readyness for a house move.

Must be very frustrating to have to move house now in the middle of this though.

Finally got hold of some more of the screws I needed, also I now have 24 EL509's!
The bottom panels still need to go on, but here's what they will look like with the valves fitted: Shades of Atma-Sphere methinks?

Ugh, another setback due to a supplier fail - this time on the part of FPE!
The remaining bottom panel is supposed to form a kind of L-shape like the top panel. A channel was specified to be drilled along the panel, such that I could bend it 90 degrees in the right place (exactly the same as what I did with the preamp panels to make the U box). The left hand panel in the picture below shows something like what the result should be:
When bending it, however, I noticed it seemed to put up a hell of a lot more resistance than the preamp panels did, even though the panel thickness and spec for the drilled out channel were exactly the same. Also there was a lot more stretch damage to the anodised surface than occurred with the preamp panels, which didn't seem to make sense.
When I clamped the other panel, I couldn't get that to bend at all. Closer examination revealed that something had clearly gone amiss when the channel was drilled out:
That is a 2.5mm thick panel, and the channel is meant to have been drilled to a depth of 2mm, leaving a portion of 0.5mm thick aluminium to be bent. FPE claim accuracy to 0.1mm so something clearly went wrong here. As these represent over €300 worth of panels, I hope they won't get difficult about manufacturing another set to the specification I provided (which I've just gone back and checked, and cross checked against the spec for the preamp panels).
Oh well, at the end of the day with the house move going on, it won't actually delay things significantly.

So after a bit of a hiatus (house move, and the summer months when I cannot bring myself to do anything) here is one completed output stage, ready for wiring into the (yet to be fitted) circuit board...
