I repaired a pair of mono promethius tvc's for a customer
(switches were both completely knackered), they were something else. One of the few repair jobs I was sad to see go. If you want to get into that area the slagle modules look like cracking value

Like industrial sculpture. Would be right at home in the Tate Gallery.

The 'wrong side of mental' 50W version.

The challenge for me would to be able to bring a version of this amp to Owston. Everything would need to be light weight or easily obtained in the UK so that the essentials could fit in my small suitcase.

60 vdc power supply per channel - apparently switchable between 115 vac and 230 vac and weighs about 1 kg

The rest of the amp components would be light weight. I suspect the Jensen transformers don't weigh a lot. For the 4.7 vdc, perhaps something like this fed from a 6 or 9 volt battery.

Now for the heat sink and my idea is to visit a local UK hardware place and get a couple of rolls of aluminium flashing like this.

Let the aluminium unroll a bit and stick a fan underneath somehow. Hopefully the moving air would cool the aluminum enough.

Attach the components to one end of the flashing on one side with the power supply on the other for shielding.

I am sure I have forgotten something but perhaps it is feasible.

I like your thinking, but I'm not sure about the heatsinking.

Spose its got to be tried. I'm scared more by the appalling heat generated by my incursions into mosfets via Nelson Pass, (of course!), than the fun to be had over 1kV with the likes of the FAB russian transmitter valves.
Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.

The phrase that was used for my Son of Zen amp - 'You could roast a chicken in there'.

I suppose you could add an additional roll of aluminium and another fan. And another roll / fan if necessary.

I'm trying the TDA1541 DAC this morning, have not used it for a while. It's in NOS mode at the moment.

Voces8 "eventide" is first up for listening. :)

Might try "the young persons guide to the orchestra" later ron.

Thanks Mark, but 800 Euro is a bit above my means at the moment. :(

I wonder if something like the 'burger grill' topped Musical Fidelity amps (A1, A200, MA50 etc) could be the way to lose the heat assuming you can source such a heatsink.

not a cat's chance...my guess, not having put a hockey puc together yet would be a sub 0.25 c/f sink. From experience this would be minimum 14"x6" with 40mm fins for each fet, but that looks like absolute minimum.

Memory is very suspect but the A100 I had in the 1980s was tiny in comparison.
edit:Plus it had an intrusive fan

In my original design the heatsink would have been like that, but practical considerations for breadboarding ruled against it.

Also, the input transformer needs to be away from radiating fields which caused me to modify the design again.

I'm still thinking of a way to "box them up", but I did consider cutting each heatsink in half and mounting one mosfet on each. That would cut down on the size problem, maybee. :)
