Success! 5V @200mA :-)

Image

My board's a little understuffed compared to Andrew's (steady David!) as I used a fixed 5V reg

Image

It's roughly the positive half of this one, made up with parts I had in stock

Image

Being an awkward so and so who wanted to use the board in his own way I traced the circuit out so I could see which component went where from Andrew's schematic. I've only traced the +ve out below as the earth plane would get complicated to show. Might be useful to others? (BTW I think the marking of the polarity of the two bypass caps C6 and C15 might be the wrong way round on the PCB. Not an issue for me.)

Good stuff Andrew, I like it :-).

Gosh Simon, well spotted, here's the ground plane highlighted.

PLEASE BE AWARE.

The symbols, well spotted Simon, are the wrong way up on the two by pass cap locations, the negative pins are the lower ones and the positive the upper ones, assuming you're reading the screen print writing the correct way up.

I'll add this to stacks.

Thanks Simon, I have made the correction to my design and so if we make up anymore they'll be the correct orientation on the labels.

I'll upload my traced circuit sketch to the stacks too, for reference. Amazing what one (er, me) forgets over time...

Impressive use of clip leads there Simon!

Also glad to see you didn't waste any unnecessary effort removing that resistor from its tape…. :D

Very useful to know about those bypass caps mis markings, I have 'sharpee'd' my boards accordingly, well done!

All,

Just to make sure, I have sent a PM to those of you who have not replied to Simon on the thread (as I have now way of knowing if you have had chance to read the thread) and therefore have seen the erratum.

thanks,

Andrew

Yes thank you Andrew I hadn't read the thread.

I'm trying to get my head round the LED in the fused AC input and the purpose of Rled. The current draw is set by the load and could potentially be an amp or more, or just a few mA. So the LED needs to be able to withstand an appropriate current. Is it as simple as this or am I missing something? And what then is the purpose of Rled?

Presumably I could just use the polyfuse and link out Rled and the LED?

Is the LED meant to light up only if fuse has blown?

Value for R1 will be Voltage between AC1 & AC2 / current for LED1, 10mA?

Doh! I've looked at the PCB again and the LED and Rled are in parallel with the polyfuse, not in series. Silly boy! That makes more sense. So I guess I want to limit the current through the LED to somewhere between 1 and 10mA with a suitable resistor. So in my case with a 6 secondary and, say, a 2V drop across the LED, use a resistor = 4 / 0.005 = 800. Sound about right?
