yes, it's because I dived in with a multimeter before the voltages had settled. :oops:

Both amps are behaving in the same way

These were built by Dr John, and I received them as they are now, minus choke and OPTX. I've fitted both and apart from the anode of the EF86 all the voltages check out. :?

Did you get it sorted?
Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?

Yes I've finally got both working, with a great deal of help from John Caswell.

I've removed the battery bias and replaced with the capacitor/resistor between the cathode and ground.
I'd like to attempt to charge the NiCads but they're in a heatshrink shroud with 2 wires soldered to the + and -, and a bridge soldered between the + and - at the other end. I don't have any heatshrink to re-assemble the package which is making me hesitant to break it open.

Is battery bias a huge step in terms of sonic performance?

In my opinion battery bias firms-up the low bass ( by taking out a time constant ) but the rest of the sound goes to hell . I'm sure there will be a few people offering the opposite opinion soon :D
