#1 Audiofile CD transport.

Post by pre65 »

Thought it best to start a proper thread on this.

I've got a Sony PS1 (model SCPH-1002) for the bargain price of £15. I've also got a PS2 DVD remote control and receiver for £5 which can be fitted to the PS1.

I've got the PS1 now, but it won't actually play a CD without some sort of controller, so I need to do the remote control mod first.

Then, if it works on the phono outs I aim to convert it to SPDIF output.

One potential problem is that the PS1 PSU is underneath the laser mechanism, and that can suffer from heat. Maybe I can relocate the PSU to a separate box and stop that problem, anyway, it will be fun to try.

I've got the case apart, and got the front port sub assy off, easy peezy.

The instructions say "simply remove the board from the port."

Sounds easy, but you have to de-solder 58 places on the PCB.

Is there a cheap de-soldering tool one can use, I can't bugger up the PCB as it has to be refitted with the RC module soldered in.

The fella I sold my Rogers speakers to used a PS1 as his CD source, sounded OK. His EMT TT(s) sounded better I have to be honest :) He used a basic generic remote control too and IIRC had an LCD track display built onto/into the PS1!

Indeed Paul, but to play CDs it needs some form of controller.

I could use the PS1 games controller for the time being, they come up cheap on Ebay.

I got the PS2 DVD remote control today, and the matching receiver.

I plugged the receiver into front port 1, put new batteries in the remote, pressed the button and the player started playing.

It only gives very basic functions, but that will get me started.

It's only in the office system at the moment on the mini monitors, so not able to say much about sound quality, but Daniel O'Donnell sounds OK. :)

Will try it in the main system tomorrow.

The wonders of modern technology! That's a truly astonishing achievement.
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

I've just won another PS1 on Ebay, £2.99 + postage.

This is supposed to be unused. :D

I like what the PS1 does (so far) so a spare one (at that price) is a no brainer.

Sounds fairly good in the main system through the phono outs. Thing is, I've read that the output voltage is not 2v, more like 1.5v, so the pre need cranking up a fair bit more.

And, looking at where the SPDIF needs to be taken from, it's two legs of a surface mount chip.

Even under a magnifying glass it looks a most delicate procedure.

And then there is no room to put a normal RCA phono socket for the output.

As Ed would say, Oh waily waily.
