#1 Quick Q re. catalogue chokes ( small ) metal core

Post by IslandPink »

The other day I went looking on the usual commercial sites for small ( eg. 1mH , 2mH ) chokes at low current , < 0.1A .
This is in the context of making internal amp-based crossover filters for speakers ( my multi-channel amp ) .
I found it very difficult to find anything that wasn't ferrite .

If anyone has better info or has seen something, using a 'nicer' core , I would very much appreciate a link .

I know that I could ask typical transformer makers for custom parts, but I should be able to find cheaper off-the-shelf parts to try this sort of thing out . For instance, for a low-pass rolloff for a bass speaker , it would not be necessary to use a custom-designed wide-band choke ( as Romy has pointed out ) .
hence the search ...

Air core for low pass? Make your own? James and i had very successful large diameter cored inductors on our bass helpers at speaker level. For 100ma at amplifier level much finer wire means much smaller part. Should be practical.

Not sure about air-cores Paul - would like to avoid further sources of hum pickup . I was rather hoping somebody did some small chokes of this sort of value that are mu-metal canned . Metal cores at least concentrate the flux into a smaller area .

Very good point. Not an issue when they are at the loudspeaker level.

What about these from Monacor?

http://www.monacor.co.uk/products/speak ... component/

I have an account with Monacor and have to place an order for some speaker components in the next few days. I could add any these to the order for you and give a big discount on the RSP quoted price.

Thanks Colin . Not exactly what I was looking for for in-amp components , but they are certainly a good source of affordable speaker-level parts that I wasn't aware of . Might take you up on that 'deal' on a pair maybe for the bass speakers . I'll get back to you fairly soon on that .

Colin :
I think a 3.3mH and a 2.7mH -
( LSI-33T and LSI-27T )
would be very useful for filters on the midrange driver .
Just one of each . Can you add that to your order ?

Mark,
though the order was placed Sunday, I have just heard back from Monacor saying they only have the 3.3mH choke and for that matter most my order is out of stock despite their web site indicating all was in stock UK!

They are telling me the order will not be delivered until 23rd July.

Sorry nothing I can do about it. I get this a lot lately when I place orders and their web site indicates the item is in stock only to find they don't have the full quantity ordered.

Does this muck up your arrangement with Chris?

Thanks for telling me Colin - very helpful . I think Chris and I can sort this out regarding the speaker . It does free me up to be in North Wales this weekend for the Snowdon Mtn Race ( spectating these days ! ) which I had almost forgotten about . I will also arrange a later weekend to visit my mother .
