I've now received my new preamp. Built by Philip Ramsey for his own use, but he thinks there may be an RF problem somewhere.
Anyway, it's in the system and playing, sounds good to me.
Here is one picture, more to follow when I take the base off and have a look inside.
Briefly, it's a choke input with valve rectifier and two chokes, ECC82 and 6463 valves and Audionote 1:33 output transformers. It has RCA phono and balanced outputs.

Very nice . large chunks of iron for a preamp.

Been using it with the KT66 (trioded) amps and there seems more bottom end than with Pre3.
I think Mark would like how it sounds with the 18" woofers.

Will do, not 100% sure I'm coming yet.Mike H wrote:Bringing it to Owsters?
It seems I'm hearing more of the recording, the presentation is a tad more "up front", or a gnats less "laid back". .
Also, I seem to be playing things a little louder.
I'm pleased so far, and I think it has surpassed Pre3, which justifies the purchase.

I opened it up yesterday (forgot to take a picture )
It's got a stepped attenuator, Audionote copper coupling caps and a smattering of Blackgate caps. The circuit boards are custom built with turret tags and very well laid out.
This morning I replaced the ECC82 with a 5751WA (cos I had one) but so far I can't notice any difference.
Next step will be to rewire the valve base and try a 6N6P in place of the 6463.

I've just realised that the 6N6P is wired up the same as a 6CG7, which is a 9 pin 6SN7, so that can be tried as well.pre65 wrote:

I'm trying the new pre with the 833a amps this morning.
It's a while since 833a was fired up so I'm getting used to the sound again.
