#1 How about building a high voltage project thread?

With great caution.

1500v 50uF PP

for such a project.

Any comments or alternative suggestions?

I used a couple of those caps in that choke input 211 I built years ago. Terminals always seemed a bit close together but never any problems.

Cool, but they are not exactly cheap.
I usually use 3 630V caps in series.

I don't. Understand the not cheap concept.

You would need 9 of same value to replace one of hhese with your method, which would have to cost you £2.40 each to work out the same cost. Then you need space for 9 caps and make 9 neat holes in the chassis.

Sorry, I didn't catch that is was for 4 caps.
I usually use the axial black 630V caps.
They don't cost as much.
And they go underneath, so no holes.

Yes but it takes 9 of those (if they are same value) to do the same job as 1 of these.

Sorry again, Paul, I had a really crap day day at work, so my brain is in vacation mode...

What are you planning to build with those high voltage caps?

Probably monoblock 833a's finally built and made safe, at last.

Nice one Paul.

I use 3 sets of three on each of mine.

Although I'm too chicken to use them myself I thought I should mention that your average domestic microwave contains an high voltage transformer which comes with a 1u oil filled capacitor and can be readily obtained at a very reasonable price, ie, free. I don't know what the exact voltage is but even when I fed 100 v into the primary my meter wouldn't register it so with mains it must be over 1500v. It is designed to run off the mains but is a bit noisy but is fine with 125v on the primary. It is also possible to make a centre tap in the secondary and run it backwards as a push pull transformer, although I guess that won't appeal to the purists amongst us.. However, the price is right and if you sell the rest of the oven for scrap you could even make a profit. Steptoe.

Thank you. Ya well aware.

I have more than enough high voltage transformers.
