#1 Loftin white / Shishido

Post by andrew Ivimey »

OOOooooooer I woke up on Wednesday and thought 'Loftin white'. Why? who knows .... But I have had so much fun in the past with that schematic that Angela in the US and Phil Ramsay of Bluebell here in UK were very enthusiastic about. maybe they still are - they should be. (And of course Nobu Shushido in Japan originated)

I dragged out a chassis and resprayed it and bolted this, that and the other to it. Then the solder flowing freely over fingers and components dragged from here and there. I found a GZ34 (Bentley so could be Mullard) with a broken plastic bit and plugged it in. A Sovtek Ecc83 came next followed by Brimar - well why not. And then I found a pair of 47s - these are not and never should be similar to 2A3s but in they went (with suitable adapters). Now its 'The torture never stops'. I didn't stop to check my wiring - it just did, out of memory but I had to check which pins were which with ecc83.

It sounds marvelous - wonder what 2A3s will sound like but I have so many 47s as they are pariah stock and I have plugged the eight ohm speakers into the four ohm outputs to try to cope with the difference.

happy as a sand boy - of course it could be the Cotes du Rhone but if it solders up right after a bottle then lisssnin is all to the benefit - specially if it works.

KY - don't be shy . $69.95 give her a try!

bliss et joie!

oh and the output transformers are those really ugly and compromised Hammond 125FSEs as specc'd but we know they are crap as they are -3dB down after 100Hz - does this matter!?

Not to be picky after such a wonderful eulogy for the loftin-white and the 47...

but you are cruel to the 125FSE! It's -1dB at 100Hz and that is at full rated power - 20Watts for this one - so its really not that bad at all!

Nice to see that an increasing number of other folks are doing stuff and writing about it.

Is there enough good Klezmer to warrant a 'Best of'!?

-1dB well shiver my timbers! I bought these years ago for loftinwhite a la bluebell. They did service for a while on the good ship Ongaku until some real audionote trafos hove into sight. I've found a pair of some ecc83s now. The brimar can go back in the box.And I've found some Mullards that would never get used. A copper anode gz37 is terrifying the ht into School and the Tallis Scholars are singing their hearts out through a pair of sigma208s.
