The noise isnt a problem when listening, and at listening levels you have to go up to the speaker to here it (with no music) so i guess in practice its not a problem. Thats about what I would expect with the phonoII/III. Bipassing the cathode resistor on the first stage will increase gain and reduc...

Sounds like its just the self noise of the valve. Not RF at all (I guess you mean the interstation from a FM tuner). What cartridge are you using? Noise only makes sense if referred to a level of signal (signal to noise ratio). If using your cartridge the noise if to loud, then you will need to find...

Brian,I know Mike has spent a lot of time eliminating the hum on the amp,and AFAIK it's a quiet as he can make it.If you do buy it,looking at your budget, you could also buy a pre 3 to go with it,which is a very good preamp.Using one of these seems to reduce hum still further,or ar least my pre 2 di...

Yep, nice amp the glasshouse is, its still single ended. What you need is a 300b SET to try at home with your speakers. Not sure if there are any near you. It may all be worrying over nothing, 6W may be more than enough for your needs, and a 300b will work fine. For the upper bound of those prices y...

Q1. While there may be gains by changing from a PP to a SET, is it possible to generalise what may be lost by such a change? In general, no, I don't think it is possible to generalize about this. It very much depends on the PP and SET amp in question. And as you know, your speakers. I often prefer ...

Just one thing that the above matches. Looking at the upper triode in the SRPP you have, I think that far from a CCS, its actually presenting a actual load in the order of 220k. Put that in parallel with the 470k load and you get a actual load the lower valve is seeing of 150k which is not far from ...
