This may not be any help but I find it slightly surprising you need so much power with these speakers. A friend of mine has the D700s (2x10") and they work and sound great with his 35w/ch valve amp.

I have had trouble with City Link in the past and avoid them if I can.
Otherwise I have no strong preference between carriers.

Hello Shane,
I think you will not go far wrong with JJ or Electro Harmonix. Both are decent quality for a reasonable cost. In my amp (WD KEL84) the JJ sound a bit warmer and softer of the two.

Hello Nick, I notice you have the output transformers spaced up off the chassis. Is this for sound quality reasons ? Phil. I'll make a wild guess and say the nuts below hold the stack together and if you take them off, i.e. to mount it flush, it will fall to bits because of the air gap Thank you. P...

I have dug out the instructions for my KEL84 and there is no reference to top hats in any text or drawing so this is obviously not something they were consistent about. I bought mine in mid 2006.

Hello Toppsy,
I have a KEL84 that I built myself and it does not have any top hats under the bolts. I also have a Sowter transformer in my WD based phono stage and that doesn't have any either. There are a few other TX's in my "bits box" and none of them have them.

Well you learn something every day, I thought it was only toroidal transformers where mounting bolts could cause problems. I can't recall ever seeing a "normal" transformer with insulated bolts. I will go and have a look through my bits and pieces this instant.

I still buy HiFi World, but only about 4 times a year I would guess. I read magazines at work in my lunch break. I tend to pick it up in WH Smiths and look to see if there is anything "tasty" in the valves or vinyl line and if not, put it back and buy an "Astronomy Now" or "...

Hello Andrew. I don't know if this is relevant but I had the lid not staying up on my Pink triangle LPT. After a look I saw it was because the 2 parts of the hinge that the lid slots into had stretched apart. This meant that the lid did not stay back far enough to 'over balance' and so stay up. My s...

Frome is not that close to where I live but I work fairly close, in Midsomer Norton. I have only been to Frome a few times, to visit a nice little telescope shop there. Astronomy is another hobby of mine.

The two most effective things I changed were the rectifier diodes on both boards and the bipolar electrolytics on the DAC/output PCB.

A big improvement for only a few pounds spent.
