But I wonder if Prince of Bassdom has come across this kind of piston pump in his travels. Well young man, have you? Weeeeeeelllllll....... s'funny you should mention that...

No a TVC is as you say "many many tapped secondary" an AVC/TVA is more like a variac in operation. Dave's iron is highly thought of. Don't DIY HiFi Supply do some and what about Nick Lucas, which ones are in his Glasshouse TVC? -- Andrew Ah, I see. Hence the reference to the term 'autofor...

The advantage of the TVC is that it doesn't burn off unwanted voltage to ground like a pot but converts the voltage energy downwards and the current upwards; the transformer as a lever . The disadvantage is that they represent an inductive load to the source and to keep the bass the Henries must be...

Almost, The reason I use the buffer is I liked the result of using a inductive volumn control, but after some messing around with Andrew (L)'s TVCs it was obvious that the most significant contributoir as to if the sound was good or bad was how well the source could drive the input of the TVC. So t...

Ok, I'm getting my head around what they do, I foolishly assumed the 'volume control' was within the buffer circuitry for some reason to isolate it's effect to both i/p and o/p. Nick, so your buffer as you say feeds straight into a TVA ( a stepped transformer yes?). The way in which you've done that...

Buffer/unity gain amps.

I noticed over the weekend that lots of you fellers use either pre-amps or buffers of some kind before your main power amps. I had a little chat with our MrI too and he too is playing with bufferages/unity gain stages. Now then my understanding of them is that they maintain an input AND an output im...
