Re: The Quackery Thread
have never yet been really cold. If you have never been, I can thoroughly recommend Iceland. Iceland's a doddle! Lovely as it is (we really like it), it's not that cold... Try spending a winter in Newfoundland and Labrador - we hit -40C (before windchill) in Labrador which I remember well as it's t...

Re: The Quackery Thread
Could be right, too. I do like a nice bit of physics. However, when I visited a lab in a desert (low humidity, doncher know), we were instructed to wear cotton only because of the static problems. This was fine for me because as commented by a friend, "Sartorial and elegance are just words to ...

Re: Audiojumble 03/03/24
I looked up ECLL800. Looks like a nightmare waiting to happen. With shared cathodes, unbalanced anode currents are a given. And that phase splitter looks proper dodgy. I didn't see any audio measurements in the Practical Wireless article. If anyone can resolve that, it's you! Accept the challenge! ...

Re: Audiojumble 03/03/24
What an interesting valve. A one socket push pull output stage. I've got 10 of those, NIB. They were for a project that, like many others, I've not yet found the time for. At one time I had a thing for "spud" amps, so these made sense. E = 6.3V, C = Triode, LL = 2 x Output Pentodes, 8 = B...

12,000! Blimus! If you have any 6SJ7 (octal small-signal pentode), I would like a couple. I have about 1,500 valves, so I consider myself well-stocked. Do you need anything? Re: Audiojumble 03/03/24
Often, stuff that glows. All depends, really. I am on the lookout for an aluminium fan (the kind valve Tek oscilloscopes had) to put inside my temperature cabinet. Moving magnet cartridges without styli for measuring in my ongoing cartridge investigation. Enamelled copper wire. But probably not cap...

Re: Interesting (non musical) YouTube videos.
Fascinating stuff. Croydon really caught it during WWII on two counts - firstly, the airport and secondly because German bombers that were being intercepted by fighters, when damaged, often just dropped their bombs short of their target (typically docklands) and ran for home. Croydon thus caught a h...
