Rather like Steve I got a shock pulling the ICs from the back of my breadboarded headphone amp. I was using my SB3 as source and wasn't aware that it took it's earth from one of the ICs. It's on the A19 about a mile north of M62 J34. Opposite a plant auction yard, but that's another story involving motorway closures and emergency demolition.

How much current is it possible to shunt in this way? I've never seen it used in a power amp for instance, so I guess it's relatively low?

It started life as Lynn Olson's Raven, but has morphed a bit since then. But it gives the general idea.
