Re: OK…so I’m on wi’ summat
Right then! Mk2 is stepping tentatively off the drawing board: IMG_0366.jpeg Holey aluminium has been bent into shape, giving more front to back chassis depth than the mk1, which means… IMG_0367.jpeg I can bring these three big buggers out of retirement. It will have a choke-input power supply off a...

Re: OK…so I’m on wi’ summat
I need more inputs, as I want to use my Beresford DAC to give hi-fi sound from the TV and AppleTV, via optical, so will be rebuilding the amp into a new chassis over the next few weeks. It's a nice little amp and deserves a bit better than a scratched to fsck bit of bent metal for a case. Obviously ...

Re: OK…so I’m on wi’ summat
I've taken on board a few things, put in a bit of work and done some alterations to the power supply. With a 100uF EL34 cathode bypass cap in series with the last cap in the power supply (changed to 50uF + 50uF, F&T dual electrolytic) I now have 33.33uF instead of the 15uF, giving a 3dB point of...

Re: OK…so I’m on wi’ summat
Forgot about the caps being in series making 15uF in total, which puts the 3dB point at 27hz.

Bit of food for thought there.

Re: OK…so I’m on wi’ summat
Again, for the sake of completeness:
KT66 or EL34? Both are good. I prefer the latter, but others might prefer the former. It's all subjective in the end.- Sat Mar 02, 2024 11:14 am

Re: OK…so I’m on wi’ summat
Configuring the James OPTs for 3.5K primaries means one can use EL34s properly: EL34SEUL.jpeg I might install a double pole changeover switch so that the primaries can be switched between 5K and 3.5K (not on the fly!) to make it a nice versatile piece of gear. It now puts out 10.8Wpc in single ended...

Cheers Morgan,
I learned how to do heater wiring from your “Building Valve Amplifiers” book.

Re: Nothing In Particular
Replaced my shagged out soldering iron yesterday with this cordless iron:
Brilliant bit of kit. Excellent for hairy-arsed valve amp projects. I will now be able to build amps without making a ton of dry joints. - Thu Feb 29, 2024 9:59 am

Re: OK…so I’m on wi’ summat
Inspired by Paul's adventure with the sixty-five-fifty SE amplifier, I've decided that great though the 6V6 amplifier is; it's not really dynamic (powerful) enough for the relatively inefficient 87dB/W Mission 773 speakers. Loads of finesse, detail and sweetness from the amp but a little lacking in ...
