Re: Sound damping material
I am taking it, that by a previous comment offered, I got your location quite wrong. No problem, John. The resonances are not easily heard until you remove them.. The bass sounds so clean, fast, and real compared to my previous sub (active/closed box) that it probably will take a while before I sta...

Re: Sound damping material
To me a rattle sounds like the speaker is exceeding its Xmax . You are right, Steve! I've found the problem. These amps have a lot of extra settings and the servo settings in combination with the typical x-over/PEQ settings was not correct. The servo control (extension filter) can be set to low/mid...

Re: Sound damping material
Some would consider MDF only fit for building prototypes, because it's cheaper than "proper" materials. The only material which sounds more "dead" if you knock on it is some kind of resin which is used for those very expensive speakers (like WilsonAudio etc). Normally MDF is con...

Sound damping material
I have finished my first OB sub with servo controlled woofers (second one in the making) and was wondering if cheaper damping sheets than "No Rez" or "Black Hole 5" would have the same effect? http://gr-research.com/norez24x27sheet.aspx/amps/amps.htm http://www.speakercity.com/Me...

Re: Tannoy Enclosure
This is a very interesting discussion. And all the necessary components are in the mix like critical damping, room interaction, speaker behavior at resonance frequency, DF of amp, historic development of speaker-amp-relation etc. The only thing this discussion is still missing IMO is to draw the rig...

Re: 300B Headphone Amp
Looks like some typical ground loop stuff, Ray. I would try first to connect one power plug with reversed phase/neutral (turn it around 180 degr) and see what happens. I am sure this is an easy fix.
I am eager to hear about your experience with the different filter settings!

Re: Tactile perception
Very impressive! This thread documents a lot of what went into the concept:

Is there any SQ benefit/advantage doing it like this compared to using an active x-over?The crossovers are passive line level built into the amplifiers.

Re: Tactile perception
These are nearly always subtle tonal colours or combinations, vocals that sound so real they are in the room, or the 'stuff between the notes'. I have only experienced these insights from low-power drivers or compression drivers which have no 'stiction'. That would also describe some part of what I...

Re: Tactile perception
In a nutshell I would say it depends on how well the amps can drive the speakers (not only power related) so that they can couple effectively enough to the air volume of the listening room and how capable the speakers are to do that (like:moving enough air fast enough) which then creates ideally thi...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results
Well the price of the drivers is what it is, I’d say an NX 3000 could be used instead which is a good bit cheaper. How much were your Lowthers? Vic commented that he’d tried a lot of bass drivers, it was these particular ones that give these very good results. The Lowthers DX4 were almost the same ...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results
Aside form the frame construction this "bass-design" would cost: 4x $299.90 for the woofers and $550 for a Behringer NX4-6000! This is basically about the same price as the GR open baffle dual servo subs with 2 A370 amps and servo control. The most important difference for me is the fact t...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results
Very interesting. Thanks for the report. Can we have more information and close up pics especially about the "hanging mechanism" ("The PRV mid/top drivers are hung from a U shape bracket, again with a loop of cable under the top drivers' magnet. Vic made some fish plates, more or less ...

Re: SLOB project
The Liionidas OB looks like very interesting project. With all these options it's very hard to make the right choices.I am really torn right now what to do. Building a H-frame bass with 2 servo controlled woofers and test it first with my existing PM6A horns (one channel only) or simply follow a pla...

Re: SLOB project
I really don't know enough about servo-controlled woofers. My understanding is they are mostly used for high power applications in PA. Do they sound any good at normal room HiFi levels ? It would probably need to bi-amped, as I have no idea what it's parameters would look like in a conventional cro...

Re: SLOB project
Ray, I don't question the SLOB. I think N.Pass does really cool stuff from what I have seen. I am sure it will work. My point was rather that if the OB bass can sound so good why not make some additional efforts and solve all/most existing problems around OB bass with a servo controlled woofer? Beca...
