Re: Triaxial

BMS has been doing similar for a while: https://www.bmsspeakers.com/index.php-1 ... ms_15cn890
But not with an 18" cone!

Neat way of getting full-range out of one box, and I can imagine an 18" stage monitor being popular with drummers.

Re: Something Stirs in the Workshop

Just a quick note that FIR-based DSP can manipulate frequency and phase responses independently of each other.

ie, you could dial in a boost/cut without any phase shift, or dial in phase shift without changing the frequency response.

Re: Something Stirs in the Workshop

Steve,

If you're thinking about 2.5" drivers, the SB65 is worth a go. Nice little driver with a copper sleeve on the polepiece for demodulation.

Re: Something Stirs in the Workshop

If we get together to play with those new horns, I can bring a BMS along to try if you like.

I must admit that I haven't got around to doing much with them just yet. There's thought towards a Synergy horn build for PA use, but it's very much in the contemplative stage at the mo.

Re: My Swansong speaker build

IIRC, the EQ ended up as follows: 2nd order lowpass 38Hz notch 100Hz boost With varying filters required to achieve the right shape in each place. The 38Hz notch, IMO, was very very necessary. If you play Hey Now by London Grammar, the bass notes should be even in volume, with the very bottom note (...

Re: My Swansong speaker build

Just to add to that. When we went to the original mk1 filter with -3db at 265Hz, when increasing the bass level to the point it sounded right, it was stamping on the clarity of the mid range. So that's when we noticed it was 265Hz not 200Hz, dialing it back to 200Hz allowed the bass level to be inc...

Re: On the subject of HiFi

Thanks for your thoughts Chris. i was wondering, reading between the lines on the other thread, if your problem with 'realistic sound' was loudness. My concept of 'realistic sound' does not require it to be loud, certainly not as loud as modern gigs. Also, all lot of what I listen to was never play...

Re: On the subject of HiFi

Nick, I'm not even sure that an orchestra can be recorded with accuracy. Mic positions are typically 10+ feet in the air, often positioned just behind the conductor - that doesn't seem like a realistic listening position, but it does seem to be the place where microphones deliver the most pleasing r...

On the subject of HiFi

A bit of a philosophical discussion, I suppose, on the subject of "HiFi", realism in audio, etc. I gave up on the concept of HiFi a while ago, for a few reasons: - The first is technical. It's my opinion that there are simply too many filters between us and the musicians to get a truly acc...

It's about recreating real life <snip> Apologies to anyone else that i just rubbed up the wrong way, but I just feel really frustrated. Mark, I think it's here that our ideologies are fundamentally different. Here's the crux: I gave up chasing "HiFi" a while ago. In my opinion, it simply ...

Yep. Nick's OBs certainly let more light through.

How would you measure/define transparency in audio?

Re: Another speaker thread

Simon, When you say "8x average", do you mean you told REW to do multiple sweeps in the "Measurement" pop-up, or did you run the same sweep eight times (ie, clicked "measure" eight times, did 8x single sweeps) and average those? Assuming the same mic position, I find th...

Re: A Mains Cable Story

Having spent a while working with equipment that has to work come-what-may, I find the talk of mains cable differences quite disorientating. Examples: - Running a medium-sized (multi-kilowatt) PA system on the end of 75m of 13A extension reels. - Running the same PA system on a 5KVA petrol generator...

Re: My Swansong speaker build

Had a productive evening at Colin's yesterday, having found a bit of time between work and gigs to go over there and get the ball rolling. This is a write-up for those interested in how that went, plus tasting notes for whoever might demo them in the future. First up, these new speakers make the Edi...
