Re: Spectre & Meltdown CPU vulnerabilities...

Meltdown is Intel only... Not certain at all. ARM have said that they may also be vulnerable and it's currently unclear whether AMD are affected. I have not yet seen any sign of that, do you have any links? Yep. from https://meltdownattack.com/#faq-systems-meltdown (this site is maintained by the c...

Re: Malware cleaner.

Seems a bit unfair that Nick, OpenSSL is not a Linux toolchain, conflating the two in respect of bugs seems off to me, nothing stopping the other vendors from writing their own crypto subsystem if they want. All software has bugs. My point entirely. Linux, in it's purest form, is the kernel and not...

Re: Spectre & Meltdown CPU vulnerabilities...

Nick (Jack) what is the likely hood of this vulnerability being exploited from a home user point of view? I don't think there have been any reported cases of it being used to-date. Good question. The answer is probably not likely, but PoCs have already been presented which exploit these via a websi...

Re: Malware cleaner.

Having run a RPi3 for three weeks now as a low powered desktop I have to say I agree with Nick, I don't think I'll ever use a Windows based system again for my own personal use. Having a team of professionals to look after hundreds of Windows servers and clients is all well and good but when you do...

Re: Spectre & Meltdown CPU vulnerabilities...

That useful app may give the indication its a windows problem, its not, its just that app is windows specific. A point worth emphasizing - this is a HARDWARE issue with the CPU chips from pretty much everyone - it is NOT A SOFTWARE ISSUE. Linux/Windows/Android/IOS/MacOS/... makes no difference. Thi...

Re: Spectre & Meltdown CPU vulnerabilities...

Gents, We are all obviously aware of the Spectre & Meltdown issues.... erks! We are?! Well, anyone with more than a gram of grey matter :) EDIT: That was a bit unfair. Apologies. The problem has been known about in security circles for some time, but not made public. It only really reached most...

Spectre & Meltdown CPU vulnerabilities...

Gents, We are all obviously aware of the Spectre & Meltdown issues with pretty much all current CPUs from Intel, AMD, ARM and everyone else. Steve Gibson (very well regarded security researcher) has released a freeware too, InSpectre, which tells you if a host is vulnerable to either attack and ...

Re: Malware cleaner.

Our Linux boxes have bugs too. Serious security problems. As do our iOS and android phones and MacOS boxes. It's arguable that the fsf toolchain is third party as are all the App and Play store applications... My team look after 480-odd Windows hosts - when looked after they give little if any probl...

I don't have Avast. What does it give you that Task Manager doesn't?

Re: Malware cleaner.

One quite good tool that came with a recent Avast update was a separate thing that looks for apps (formerly known as, programs) running in background, and stopping them being started at boot up, (unless if as & when you want them) this is to free up CPU usage & resources. Think I had like 1...

Snow? You want snow? Just had my team's offsite - so much snow (it never stopped) that we got very little skiing in and had to WORK!
