Richard, "Another thing i've wondered about is some music is recorded compressed or to be heard through bass reflex speakers. Will this music sound it's best through an "acurate" system ?" I don't know how you make music that's intended specifically for bass reflex speakers, as ...

It should come as no surprise that during the evolution of mankind to be successful and procreate, males and females developed in some ways which are different. So it should come as no surprise that men and women behave differently and different approaches. Some of this is learned and some not. Male...

Well you guys are all ahead of me All i've managed to work out recently is that the things i identify as better or worse when i listen analytically don't necessarily have the same influence in terms of making things better or worse in my enjoyment of the music. Another thing i've wondered about is s...

Paul - I switch to choke input to drop the HT when i got some meshplates. This is followed by E-chokes rather then shunt regulation. I still have unfinished business playing with drivers but now would like to try some 2A3s instead of the 300Bs. This will give me more of a feel for what the 300Bs are...

Hi Ant, i appreciate the offer. I haven't heard anyone else's gear in a domestic environment so haven't experienced what is possible. I'm off on holiday for 3 weeks this weekend so maybe sort something out when i get back. Thank you for speaking plainly Steve but i don't want to sell the amps just y...

Sounds like i should bite the bullet and compare a different output valve as well then :o Any advice as to what i could try ? At present i have about 350V HT and choke input so can vary this. Changing a few resistors and caps not a problem. I think the tentlabs filament supply has a variable voltage...

It would be interesting to try a voltage reference to earth modification to the e-chokes instead of using a capacitor to "remember" the voltage(if i understand correctly) to see if this tightens things up any further. Reading Ed's link made me wonder if i'm wanting to have my cake and eat ...

I could be barking up the wrong tree, Or even barking up a tree that doesn't exist..... Though reviewers sometimes describe a component as musical. Never really got what they meant. Is this what i'm after ? What makes an amp musical ? What i'm hearing could alternatively be to do with synergy - too ...

Perception of "common ground" seems to be a relative thing for me. These days changing a component in a system or to another system entirely usually makes a noticeable difference and i have a preference. Then again i could hear the same comparison on another day and wonder where the differ...

What is the function of the 22R resistors in the power supply ? LC filter, RC filter, LC filter, RC filter They do a fine job, there is NO hum, buzz or hiss at the speakers. I suppose what i meant was did you add them to reduce hum/noise, to damp resonance or just cos you preferred the look/feel of...

Reflections on listening

While i was comparing the sound of my SET amps to the H140 naim type circuit kits i noticed something which seemed to make a huge difference to the listening experience but i doubted i would be able to put it into words. Anyway i've decided to have a go - lets see if i get as far as pressing the sub...
