Re: Borbely EB-1198/116 Preamp

I took the plunge and cut down the pre-amp PCB to remove all the input switching and Alps volume pot - it will be a single input build with a better quality volume control and no remote control. I'm leaning towards using my Slagle autoformer attenuator.

Re: Pass Sony VFET Project

I hollowed out the back side of the panel to reduce the amount of material to be used in printing it, which reduces the cost.

The price will depend on the size and what material you choose. The panel on the VFET is a nylon material and it cost around £40 including shipping.

I sent them a .step file, Simon. I used Fusion 360 to generate it, available for free for personal use.

If I was really nit-picking I'd suggest countersinking the front panel screw holes so the fixing head was flush.
Taste Phil, the bolts were a deliberate choice.

Just about finished the project today with the addition of a front panel (3D printed by JLC).

Borbely EB-1198/116 Preamp

I think I picked up the bargain of the year! I saw a pre-amp listed on DIY Audio - the guy said it was an Erno Borbely design but didn't know which one. I studied the photographs and had a hunch that it was the 1198/116 All-FET design so, as it was listed for a very good price, I took the plunge. It...

Cressy Snr wrote: Sun Feb 18, 2024 10:04 am Now then! After squinting through the top plate mesh, with the use of a strong light and magnifying glass, I can confirm that the filter op-amps are indeed OPA1678s. :)
That's good then. Maybe just try the simplified filter board some time down the line...

Re: OK…so I’m on wi’ summat

Good result Steve. I know I'm conflating two of your threads here but just to remind that, IIRC, the filter stage of your RTZ has NE5532 op-amps and it would be good to get you a listen to one equipped with the OPAs, which we've all found to be an improvement https://www.audio-talk.co.uk/phpBB3/view...

Re: RTZ SDM (DSD) DAC

I've removed the NE5532 and fitted the OPA1678's (Thanks Tony) Got to say guys just my opinion but I found the OPA's are noticeably better , its opened the sound up and sounds less compressed , better attack . Its obviously fiddly changing smd parts so caution if wanting to try it . Next thing to t...
