Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results

Ah, Vic's posted since. If I might ask Vic, have you tried the big 18" versions in much smaller rooms than your own living room, and if so how did they fare? How much space from walls do they need?

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results

Bum. Bum bum bum.

Thanks for the report Ali. I'm going to tell myself that my 3.5m square room is too small for those 18"ers. Vic suggests 15"ers aren't in the same league so not sure what real options I would have. Are you thinking of 18s then?

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results

Excellent Ali, good man. Looking forward to your views for context. I'm hoping you're not that impressed. But only cos I can't justify £1600 for the drivers plus the DSP...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results

An interesting take on OB. I'd really like to hear them to understand just how they sound.

Re: GM70 PP

Dunno. If you think you can hear the difference in rectifiers, not saying you can't BTW, you probably need to try 1Ns, something faster, then try the 6AX4s etc. and see what difference you do hear. There's a lot written on the net about which is best but nothing clear. I suspect it's very individual...

Re: GM70 PP

If it helps any the GM70 amp I brought to Owston last year used 6AX4GTs for the GM70 PS. The 12GN7 drivers used SS rectifiers but I can't for the life of me remember if they were simple 1Ns or something faster.

Re: Signal Generators

This won't help Stephen but what I've done in the past is create some test tones and sweeps in Audacity, saved them into my Squeeze Center library and then I can just play them, in a loop if necessary. It's been very educational, along with a spectrum analyser ap on my tablet/phone, though I don't k...

Re: SLOB project

Yes I found the side wings added to the zing of the 208EZ wide band drivers around 2kHz which is why I moved to the simple flat baffle for the 208s and the H frames for the 285GMFs. Definite improvement.

Re: Streaming advice please

Okay thanks Max, I thought it might.

For those that have tried, how does Spotify compare to others like Tidal for sound quality?

Re: Hypex NCore NC400 Monoblocks

Probably a stupid question but here goes ... Why don't you run the GM70s you have down lower for the woofs as well? Not at all stupid Stephen, it's an eminently sensible thing to do. And I used to do this with a series crossover with honking great air cored chokes and large caps. Until I tried runn...

Re: Streaming advice please

I've never tried Spotify on LMS - would my missus' free account work or does it need to be a paid version?

Er, not quite sure why there are two posts, and all the text is a quote. Never mind.

Bit of a waste though given the 285's sensitivity.
I know, even the cheap ebay 3116 boards I use are way too much. The demon inside me keeps telling to build graphite GM70 amps for the 285s but the iron alone would probably cost £700.
