For example this pre I am working on, its got the best part of £1k worth of iron in it and about £15 worth of valves. But its doing something I have never heard another pre do (including a £6k Modwrite), and it shows clearly the faults in what I have built in the past. Mmmm, I want one :). A grand ...

Sorry Simon. But I am out of work, and the meagre private pension that I am about to receive is only just enough to exist on till I get the state pension in 2015. So the loss of the winters fuel allowance is not a joke to me. Sometimes it is more palatable to make light of bad situations. Indeed. C...

Sounds to me like this world will be interesting to grow up in. You wouldn't want it to be dull :). This world is a fascinating, exhilarating, rewarding, dangerous, scary place to live. It's all there for you to experience and enjoy, just be prepared for it to bite you on the rear when you least ex...

I heard on the radio today that the over 60's winter fuel allowance may go for a burton. That's me done for.  Ouch. Perhaps slightly insensitive given the context? Not sure I understand. The winky smiley thing at possibly losing your winter fuel allowance when there are some that have &...

I think Chris can probably be forgiven for being a young lad that hasn't lived through a proper recession yet; most of us remember the structural change that occurred 30 years ago. And without getting into politics, the new lot removing the tax advantage to the UK game industry isnt helping either. ...

Steve,

It looks like the transformer cores on the back row might affect the OPTs because of their orientation? Dunno, never tried it, but MJ talks about it. Just thought I'd mention it...

Thanks for sorting it out Nick - even for an expert it's been a bit of a job. Andrew makes a great point and it's something I've thought for a long time. I don't know how much it costs for Nick to provide us with a home, and it's probably less than his time for keeping things going but I'd be very h...

I'm still intrigued by Nick's cow. I was young and innocent, but not so innocent in this case that I am posting it on t'interweb :-) That sounds even worse :D Ask Nick about looking for an intermittent switching pulse when looking at amp..... go on ....go on .....go on.... Anything to do with the t...

Damper diodes have quite a slow start, don't they? How many seconds would you say?

Nice explanation, don't think I'd have got there by myself. Sounds so obvious! I guess the easiest way is two mains txs and two switches, though maybe not the most domestically acceptable solution. Perhaps if the Aikido used SS rectification and the GM70 used a slow start valve rectifier, a couple o...

Working out Aikidos gives me a bit of a headache. Hmmm, now I'm thinking about it I'm not sure I understand the stacked supply. Maybe there's a bit more to this than first glance. To get the Aikido output at -30V will need a -ve supply rail, and then it starts to get complicated. What about SRPP wit...
