Okay, if I understand this correctly, considering the first circuit on the third of Steve Bench's pages here: http://members.aol.com/sbench/reg3.html if I use a 750V ct tx, a GZ37 and choke input I reckon I should be able to achieve maybe 300V on the pass tube anode. Output voltage could be a little...

Thanks for the offer Shaun. I'll see how I get on with Steve's top cap-less JJs - they may work a treat, who knows? I had a very quick think about the series reg at the weekend. There's not a lot in it really, the only things I'm missing are the EL509/6080 and maybe a cap or two. Think I've got a 10...

A smidge over 1.4V. If I remember correctly it was just over 1.7V with the 82R resistors. In his book MJ provides a table with voltage drop for various diodes. Can't remember now which was the most appropriate but I seem to remember it being something "simple", so will any old led do like one of the...

Hi Shaun, Seems like I'm following in your footsteps :) . I was thinking about starting with the first error amplifier circuit on the third page as a starter. Interesting what you say about not being able to get the EL509 quiet. I haven't checked the 6080 out yet, SB refers to them in cascode - is t...

I finally got around to trying a couple of 1N4007 dioides in place of the C3g cathode resistors on Wednesday evening. Just as Andrew predicted this increased the gain quite a bit. I'd say it is roughly equivalent to my PHONO II now, perhaps not quite as loud, but in that ball park. No obvious detrim...

Hi Andrew,

Sorry, I missed your reply. Thanks, I figured that was what you were doing, just wanted to check really.

Simon.

Hi Shaun, Sounds like you're doing okay. You understand it as well as I do anyway; don't think I'm the person to be increasing your knowledge :( . I'm more of a practical person so I tend to build before I really understand. It's not ideal, but at least this way I get to build stuff  . One of ...

Last time I spoke to them, which was probably last September maybe, they said they were taking someone on. Looks like things are improving then. I was going off their website for rough prices. When I ordered my c cores they were 188 euros a pair, but as part of my larger order including 4 chokes, a ...

I haven't added an opinion so far because my experience is rather limited - I have Hammond 1627SE and AE c cores, both 2.5k. Nick keeps recommending AE and in my very limited experience with good reason. To me the c cores sound better than the 1627s, they're smaller and more neatly packaged, and the...

i've just built an aikido 6np1-6np6 line stage with a series reg psu which is sounding pretty good Glad you like it Shaun. Is it the version on John Broskie's website or have you amended it? I could do with a bit of drive in front of my WE91s, but I don't need much gain at all. Ideally I'd bodge my...
