Bit quiet on this thread - a select bunch me and you ! It reminds me of the times I used to frequent the Audio Asylum 'Vinyl' section quite a lot . I posted a thread one night that read "Let's hear it for Calypso Frelimo" ( which is an obscure 32-minute track from Miles Davis's 'Get up with it' albu...

It's a way of life Andrew .
"and the heat came by and busted me .. for smiling on a cloudy day"
'New Potato Caboose' is a gem too .
Must put it on in the car on the way to work tomorrow .

OK chaps Well, I intend for completeness to check the effect of a full 2nd-order high pass on the horn driver this evening . However I think any 'shout' that exists is more likely due to the breakup of the diaphragm as it rolls off ; I did try the extra roll-off at 230Hz as I said above. I can move ...

Hmmm... After my experiences so far with crossover components and autoformers, I'm wondering if I need to get a pair of these chaps : http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?id=BACDE35 and go tri-amp using a little 71A SE amp or maybe a 6E5P as per Romy to power the tweeters . That way I can hear the 28...

103R

Andrew The Denon 103R may actually be the Fantasy HiFi choice. I've just put the 103R back on after a few weeks using ( and experimenting with ) the Dynavector XX-2 II . The 103R is the clear winner. Obviously more realistic presence, midrange tone, more dynamic, and even the treble is more natural ...

I took out the extra high-pass filter at 230Hz . Sounds slightly better without it .
One reason is that a 100u /160 Black Gate NH sounds better in the mids and treble than a 1.8u Mundorf zinc/polyprop .
Shame Black Gates have gone - a major loss to audio .

Seems like Bruce Edgar prefers 1st-order slopes : http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue4/edgarinterview.htm If it's good enough for Bruce, it's good enough for me . (and for Steve S too ! ) I have tried an extra 1st-order high pass around 230Hz by means of a smaller ( 1.8u ) cathode-by-pass cap on ...

OK, as Harvey Rosenberg ( Gizmo ) said, "It's better to do it in the front than in the back " :P Having tried out the 3mH chokes on the Onken cab to give a 1st-order low-pass, it didn't sound that great and took away some dynamics. So having worked out how to do this filter internally on the amp ( r...

Sorry the shielding bit is going to be difficult with that . Now, a friend of mine made interconnects using satellite cable - the outer copper foil was left in place ; the inner thick wire was removed ; and he fed thin pieces of solid-core (enamelled ) copper down two sectors of the polythene separa...

Have you spoken to Bud Purvine ? ( O-Netics )
He sold me speaker cables and interconnect made from 140/40 litz in cotton braid outer (shoelace !) a few years ago and I've been using them ever since. At that time he didn't charge me very much ...

I like that -130dB noise floor .... Talking of hum/noise - noticed today the horn will happily sing to itself ( sort of a nasty sawtooth waveform actually ) without any power ... if the autoformers are connected . So... looks like the autoformers will need a shielded box !! ( or maybe it's just the ...

.. OK, so then I could make the series R much higher ( and cap smaller ) so it would be eg. 10x the Zout of the phono . The pentode doesn't need low-impedance grid drive, after all .... but then I would need to understand how the 100k pot interacts with this .... However , having thought a bit more ...

More

Thanks Nick for that info - I'll have to ask you more about that later (eg. where does the pot go in that ? ) Thanks Mike, good database there. Meanwhile of course the pitfall of the filter before the volume pot is that the outputZ of the phono amp becomes some or all of the series-R in the RC filte...
