Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

The 'prototype speakers' are now finished and I have assembled the parallel filter on some spare board ready for when Nick comes around. The series XO is simply a shunted inductor across the Fast10s terminals and a cap shunted across the Supravox, so don't need any special pre-mounting when we do th...

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

Apologies if this has been a long and pontificating rant. Nothing of the sort. Sounded like an honest appraisal of them after some listening. Thanks ! Thanks Mark. I have added a EDIT to the bottom of my appraisal posting regards what looks like whizzer profile changes on the new Crystal 10 replace...

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

Another question for JamesD (sorry James).

Are there any specific boundary considerations when positioning the speakers?

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

I was hoping you'd say you like the Lii drivers ! I have pondered long and rewritten this initial driver listening feedback a few times not wishing to paint a wrong impression of the Lii Audio Fast-10s driver. From Chris's posting above you would be right to think that both he a me did not endear o...

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

Agreed. The round-overs only took me around 5 mins to machine and now both speakers are finished. Just having a bacon butty with a cup of tea so after that will be mounted all the drivers and hooking the speakers up to my 300b amp. I'll just connect the Lii Audio's up first running them full range (...

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

Many thanks James and Mark for your replies. Should have asked this question before I routed the holes in the front baffle, but no matter. The holes required for rear mounting are smaller in diameter than those required for surface front mounting so it's going to be neigh impossible to enlarge these...

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

Question for JamesD. Can you advise should the drivers be mounted on the quasar front baffle from the front so the frames are prominent from the baffle or as I have initially mounted them from the rear so they are firing through the cut-out hole. I had intended to router a 1/2" round-over to the hol...

Re: What I've been doing during lockdown

edit: regarding covering....it's becoming a real pain... I have 3 airframes which have been gathering dust for over 12 months and lack of covering has been my main excuse. I wanted some transparent yellow solarfilm....but just can't find any. Since solarfilm stopped producing Hobby King have been o...

Re: What I've been doing during lockdown

thanks Colin I checked out the oz plan earlier. It seems a lot cleaner than the one you posted but it's on one sheet. The oz plan doesn't show the dihedral brace though, which is very useful. I think the section is a NACA 64 series, quite thick, so I imagine it will float quite sedately. The origin...

What I've been doing during lockdown

OK for those who have been following this speaker build thread http://www.audio-talk.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7853 Ed had noted and queried what the tailplane and fin build mounted on a building board was. So not to take the speaker thread off topic I said I'd start a new thread and here it ...

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

OK chaps back on topic this morning I mounted the drivers to the finished speaker. Not yet hooked them up to an amp but I might just hook up the Fast-10s to one my Longdog P6 amps just to help bed it in and make sure it is OK. Later I'll do the same with the Supravox. Here aresome photos of the moun...

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

edit will that saito be big enough Colin? YES it should be. Projected all up weight is 5.5lbs to 6lbs and at that with a Saito 56 (3-channel RC conversion) the plane is reported to take off in a few feet and fly around on just over tick-over revs. If not I have a Saito 50 and also a Saito 65. As sa...

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

Very good indeed. Are the final ones going to be all-Perspex ? Well now I believe that is Nick's intentions. It all depends on how these test mules perform. Plenty of experimentation for us to play with once I've finished the build. Hence the cheap and cheerful 18mm chipboard. Which sonically is be...

Re: PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

what is the tailplane and fin for Colin? Ed, The tail plane is for a RC conversion of a 1930 free flight design "Jasco Flamingo". I had started this build, oh some 12-years ago, perhaps longer. It's been up in my loft collecting dust all these years so with lockdown and a renewed interest in RC mod...

PERSPEX QUASAR ver 2.0 prototype build

This version of the Quasar OB speakers was originally designed and penned by James way back in November 2002 and is something NickG our host has been contemplating for a number of years. I got involved in building some test mules for Nick just before the lockdown and it wasn't until the beginning of...
