Re: 45 SET

Thanks for the remider. Finding the EL36, it confirmed my view it is a dead duck. Disgracefull distortiin. Shame it doesnt have 10Y or 801a. Good that GM70 at full power is as good as it measured for me. But also the 211 holds its own, and considering there is more reasons not portrayed in any chara...

Re: 45 SET

I can suure you operating my EL34 SE where its second is better than any dht has prevented me leaving the room, its addictive. The biggest improvement fixing the 2nd harmonic elephant in the room. Thats why Im not wasting time on the EL36. Sorry to report. Its a dead loss not using the valves the be...

Re: 45 SET

How brave are you ? Would you take a stereo pair of ST 45’s and get this power into 10kohm https://i.postimg.cc/K8HD0Yq7/IMG-9258.png You stay at 10 watts dissipation but you risk the voltage tolerance 380v 25mA -90 bias quiescent I have enough ST 45’s to give that a go. Bet it squashes any boitique...

Re: 45 SET

Who can hear the difference between 2 watt and 1.44 watt, but maybe reducing 2nd from 7% to half is the biggest improvement you could make. Forget boutique components, this is measurable science. This is what the different loadlines look like. Getting better all the time. Biggest improvement you cou...

Re: 45 SET

Here is an interesting thing Simon. Normal high 2nd of loved dht’s single ended. Zero 3rd. Is that the magic? So in theory you could build it push pull, wipe out the 2nd and not suffer 3rd. That ought to sound better, only in the case of the 45. Which means I need to build a push pull 45 amp. https:...

Re: 45 SET

We get that in Gas work as well Simon. Ive enjoyed music u der the influence when I was a nurse where we weren’t random tested. You do stupid things like buy speKers that in the cold light of day are horrible . But addiction in nursing isn’t uncommon often its their way of facing the job. I recall t...

Re: 801a amplifier

Picking this up again. It turned out the failure was an output transformer. So now the Tributes come into play as 10k with a single valve single ended 801a amp with 20 volts into A2. Having explored distortion in 2 to 5 watts SE designs, even in A2 this amp is best next build but with single output ...

Re: Distortion 2 to 3 W DHT,IDHT,Multigrid idht.

OK so this has led me back to the 801a amplifier. 535v - 34 mA A2 operation. Get 5.6 watts. Use the tribute OPT’s.

Re: EL36 SE Triode from ETF 2006 build

This is what Stephie said about the negative in his example 3rd

“Notice the minus sign. This indicates that the harmonic content subtracts from the fundamental (flattening it) when the fundamental is at its crest. This *usually* happens on third harmonic distortion in tubes.”

Distortion 2 to 3 W DHT,IDHT,Multigrid idht.

Right, its getting surprising. Ive probably given up on repurposed sweep tubes. But now, as the EL34 sounds so great at 2.1 watts Ive drawn up the distortion camparrisons of three valves of which you’d expect the dht’s to win. https://i.postimg.cc/xdNLvBzW/IMG-1236.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/cLBq9F8C/...

Re: EL36 SE Triode from ETF 2006 build

Yes Steve Im going off the EL84 aswell. But the EL34 at 2.1 watts is a keeper. Its the winner of this excercise. I see no point building an amp loaded with odd order distortion. I cant go out so I’ll play with other characteristic curves at 2 watts. Its a shame I dont think I can get more than a wat...
