Re: Another speaker thread
He’s also only running them down to 200hz. Also, to be picky, the "Journey to No-Baffle Speaker System" has failed a bit given the two way Kef's are enclosed. He could have put a pair of LS3/5A's on the top. Yah....this is true Nick! I had no idea this is where I would end up (if its the ...

Re: Another speaker thread
This is my experience and happy to answer any q’s! Cheers, Vic Question: Do you apply EQ by ear, or with measurements? If the latter, do you have any curves you could share? TIA, Chris Chris, I usually eq by ear. I was curious with the Gallo Stradas to see how they voiced them. Here is a graph comp...

Re: Another speaker thread
The Stradas are quite unique and display alot of the open baffle/naked characteristics. They use mechanical crossover and capacitor to protect tweeter, so not a lot of electronics in the way. They are over 90db efficient too. Being sealed units means they produce more bass than OB units, but the mai...

Re: Another speaker thread
Nick, Vic sent me a link to a thread which may be of interest if you haven’t seen it already- https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/277446-eva-foam-performance-speaker-enclosures.html Great, another long thread to digest :-D Indeed, I started reading it but lost the will to live. Maybe we shou...

Re: Another speaker thread
it's now 95 years since Kellogg and Rice came up with that infernal invention. what struck me as odd is that since that earliest of times so much effort has been spent putting the loudspeakers in all sorts of boxes. There have been a myriad of different types of boxes and half boxes and baffles and...

Re: Another speaker thread
Thanks for contributing Vic. Everything you and Ali say is very compelling! If I do end up down the DSP road this is at the top of my list. I'm interested that you've tried the AE Dipole 18 (I think?) They look to be ideal for OB but they're not cheap. What did you make of them? Hi Simon Look great...

Re: Another speaker thread
Guys...Ali brought this thread to my attention. I guess it would help to reveal some of the reasoning behind how I got to this weird design. Understand, first of all, I have no engineering/mathematical/electrical skills. All my experimentation has been trial and error. This has been an advantage bec...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results
Hey Ali! During this lockdown I decided to be productive and try out alternative to the PRV's. Blue Aran had stock of Faitals, and they were relatively cheap, fairly efficient and very smooth.....on paper anyway. Of course, singly they would not match the PRV for SPL (220W & 94db) which makes us...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results
One thing I didn’t try was to see if there was any air being shifted out of the gap between the two drivers. Wherever it comes from, there’s plenty of it! No....its completely dead. One guy on LencoHeaven called it 'a phantom baffle'! Just to be clear.....the woofers are in phase accoustically, but...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results
What I am unsure of is the eq. I don't see how you can get a flat response without bass boost which I assume there is given the size of the amps. Ali's ob's are in effect baffle-less, but I do wonder if the lossy suspension is playing a big part. Yes, there is bass boost applied on the dynamics eq ...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results
MiniDSP is one. There's also the Behringer DCX2496. The Powersoft amplifiers I've been using professionally have DSP built-in, and were a good jump ahead of the Behringer DCX2496 and iNukes I was using previously. The difference was hearing the notes (Behringer), and hearing the venue the notes wer...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results
Just to clarify: In a small room I think a single UM18 will be fine. There is definitely something magical about the UM vs the RSS390 15" I was using before and feel a 1 x 18" UM18 would give a better result than 2 x 15" Probably get away with using a single NX6000......its just I hav...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results
Great to meet you Ali.....appreciate you making the trip! I have to say my speaker journey turned up a few surprises.....discovering things sounded better without any baffle was a revelation, and the design evolved from there. The UM18's turned out to be a revolutionary step from the 15's. I never i...
