Dear Paul and Philip, all I can say is" bugger". I know you've both told me before that they weren't any use but I was still hopeful that something could be done with them, but now it seems not. My tester tells me they are 15% Ni, which gives them a scrap value of about £ 1200 per tonne so ...

Dear Paul, sorry to hear about your foot, it's just as well you've got another one or you'd really be in trouble. The gpo has done well getting the parcel to you so fast. I'm really grateful to you for having a look at those transformers. I'm hoping they may be useful either as o/p transformers, int...

Dear Andrew and Mike, are you saying that we can understand what a phenomenon is without understanding why it is the way it is? If so that will come as a great relief because my problem is thinking that everyone except me completely understands what's going on, whereas I'm now actually more confused...

Dear Nick, your description is most poetic and brings to mind a celestial orchestra performing a divine opera. Sadly though, for me it raises further questions, such as what is a magnetic field, what is an electrostatic field and what is the difference between a blue field and a red field? I think I...

Dear Nick, you have put in a nutshell exactly what I was trying to say. If there is no aether. how can light be propagated as a wave? I have read some books about the propogation of light and radio waves but they never seem to address the basic question of what is waving. I assume that is either bec...

Hi Philip. Thanks for the reference but it doesn't really explain how a thing can exist when it has neither mass nor energy. Maybe I am seeking an answer to something which humans are incapable of understanding'but that needn't stop us from trying and if anyone can explain to me how light is transmi...

Dear Mike, further to your comments I have had another look at these transformers and as I find it difficult to explain the construction in words I wonder if I could send you one or more to look at? Paul has also kindly agreed to test them to see if they're any use so if either, or both of you can te...

Dear all, thanks for your continued assistance, which is all the more appreciated as I know this is not really your main interest. Mike, reluctant as I am to question your observations, I have been up real close and personal to these transformers. having pulled some apart and I think they do have a ...

Steptoe's amp

Dear Pre 65, I must apologise for getting off the subject of Steptoe's amp on this forum. I certainly haven't lost interest in it and hope you haven't either. It is just that I am still wittering on about my GPO transformers, which I am hoping to modify for use in it if the inductance can be brought...

Dear Paul and Alex, thanks for that advice. While you are surely right Alex, because I will probably only want to measure a small number of inductors, I can't really justify buying another meter. Mine will just about measure anything except L (another example of Sod's law) so I will try Paul's magic...

Dear Alex, sorry to hear your news but those valves are younger than me and if I was ever asked to perform again I would most definitely arc violetly. I know there is a bundle more of the same vintage and I'll try to find a couple more for you. The only problem is my filing system, which is worse th...

Dear DTB, thanks for that info, which has filled me with joy. I was starting to get despondent when the kitchen table was sagging under the weight but from what you say that should be a good thing. Is it correct to say that wiring up the primaries in series will increase the inductance but decrease ...

Dear Philip, Paul, Alex, Mike and so forth, thank you for spending such a lot of time and effort in trying to help me, although I fear that this may not be the right forum for me. It is clear that while you are dedicated to audio perfection, I am dedicated to recycling old junk. What I require is so...

Morning Philip. I am in a very excited state this morning because I've just had an idea, which is amazing in itself but will be even more so if it's any use, so I would like to run it past you. Please feel free to rubbish it if necessary but here it is; 6y6 needs an anode load of 2000 ohms, so 2 in ...

Hi Philip. I have just been in touch with Alex and now have all the info to send his parcel, so thanks for the update. The amp sounds like it's coming on fine and I'm really looking forward to hearing it when you're happy with it. Could I also take you up on your offer to give a home to my bits and ...
