And last of all a nagaoka Boron MP11. I used this for a long time on my Dual 5505 Mk 2 turntable and I remember liking the sound of this one a lot. Worth buying a new stylus for? (If they're available).
That's mine that is! :D yes it is and yes you can from here:

http://www.musonic.co.uk/styli-record-n ... -1_11.html

Nagaoka are still making 'em, and the carts, (lot of people think they disappeared years ago, not so) got a new MP20 boron stylus for mine. Only they've changed all the numbers round since, looks like it's now the JNP200. Prices have gone up a helluva lot too!

.
Thanks for the info.

MP11 stylus discontinued, use MP20 instead.

Costs a hundred quid

So - better to use budget moving coil at around £115.00?

Try the stylus cleaner recommended earlier and see what it sounds like?

Buy a new Boron moving magnet stylus for a hundred smackers?

Stick with the cheapo alternatives I have now until I can afford a better turntable?

I think, actually, I'll go with the latter.

I also think I'll try the Ortofon.

Maybe also try and source a couple more headshells for easy cartridge comparison.

I've ordered one. £23.50 inc VAT & delivery is free within UK.

I'll let you know how it sounds, certainly worth a shot at that price, thanks for the link Mike :thumbright:

Glad you liked the sound of the ol' naggy MP11, must say I do too, never 'eard of 'em 'til I got the 2nd hand Thorens with it on. Likes lots of capacitance though, say 400pF minimum, tames down the treble end while simultaneously, strangely, picking up the midrange.

I think I bought the dual turntable around 82 or 83, started off with a Shure 75ED or perhaps a Shure 75 EJ then switched to the Nagaoka.

It probably stayed in place for 10 to 15 years, believe it or not.

These turntables, a couple of days ago I was watching an E-Bay auction for a Garrard 401 platter only and the mat was in poor condition. The current bid was at about £290.00 with one minute to go. At the last moment the final bid shot to £390.00 and that's what it sold for.

I wouldn't pay that on principal as you couldn't give the bloody things away at one time.

Well, ok, not quite true, but they were not sought after, although they were always respected.

The Goldring decks? Dave of the lower frequencies will confirm that when we fixed AV equipment for Ken Livingstone (heehee) we threw dozens of them into the skip.

Kinda makes me weep now tbh.

And for that reason I will not shell out big bucks for something I once considered distinctly average.

I think I'd rather buy a Pro-Ject.

Is this heresy? ;)

Hardly, but certainly it has no logic to it.

Stop!

Wait until you hear what Lenco's do in a plinth with some tweaks first Tony. You might want to reassess your preference afterwards  :)

Yes, the '75 were rumble boxes in the state that we saw them in after the 5th form had partied with it and ejected it from the 3rd floor of East wing or summat... but given a bit of TLC and some help they can be blummen ammmmmmayzing. No really.

I thought I was having my leg pulled when I asked if the Linn LP12 was still considered a good TT many yonks ago when I first met this lot. -> http://www.wduk.worldomain.net/forum/sh ... light=Linn

I've said it once, I'll say it again... pop round one night :-)

I've been thinking about your ideas for a turntable stand. I'm not sure
about the paving slab, except that it provides mass. If I were you I would
put a layer of something soft under the turntable but on top of the paving
slab. The idea is to isolate the turntable against feedback of the sound
reaching the stylus and turntable. Commercial isolation platforms are
available but they are expensive.
I made mine from six of those ultra soft spiky balls sold in toy shops
that retain their shape however they are squeezed. I put them inside
a cloth bag which is under a piece of half inch MDF board.
The turntable does feel like a boat in a harbour but in my experience
the feedback is negligible and a big improvement in sound.
I have heard of people using bicycle inner tubes coiled up and only
partially inflated and then sealed in a cloth bag. I have'nt tried them
myself. Sorbane is another vibration isolating material but I don't know
where you find it or the cost. Happy Listening.

Interesting Ron, interesting, I've taken those points on board.

I have sawn the wood to size and have purchased the paving slab.

As the turntable will be on the paving stone on a wooden stand on a concrete floor I really don't think there's much chance of feedback to be honest. We shall see.

I'm really rather confused about which direction to go in at the moment.

I definitely want to build a valve phono stage but lack a design or recommended kit.

I found a design for moving magnet only, am wondering about that but guess I would prefer moving coil.

What I'll probably do is use the Nagaoka cartridge with the Hitachi DD turntable and buy either a NAD phono stage (£65) or a Pro-ject phono stage (£85.00) then bide my time until I'm sure which direction I want to go and then substitute them.

I'm pretty much sold on the Lenco/arm route now but it still rankles paying decent money for something I once threw in a skip.

I also want to get some better speakers.

But one thing at a time eh?

The inner tube idea is an old one, but it is a while since I saw it mentioned.

Yeah but no but yeah but.... thats exactly what I thought about Lenco's and idler driven TT's Tony, then i heard 401's and GL75's in big plinths properly set up with good arms and totally changed my mind. Don't take my word for it, have a listen yerself.

How often did we ever have a GL75 in a big heavy plinth in the workshop> Not once IIRC, they were always in a nice spring resonant box.... and they rumbled.... and had shite arm bearings.. and were abused.. and had M75E carts.....

Tell you what, I'll loan you a heavy plinth + GL75 and lend you a Decca unipivot arm. You supply the cart and bolt it all together.

I recently stripped this set up down to go into the loft...

Try it, it'll cost you the petrol money to Dirtford :D
