I was over at Nick's this afternoon and this amp is rather good indeed. It has a super sound with lots are air and ambiance and emotion I could happily live with this myself.

Shame about that ugly looking partridge TX but that's how the customer wants it I understand. Some people, no taste for aesthetics.
But then hey Nick putting a tranny cover over this affects the sound right Wink Laughing

Those output transformers look really neat - much tidier than Dave Slagle's units Very Happy

Nick told me he was very pleased with the sound - a tough call between that and his 211 amp from what he said .

We had a listen to them this aft, the 211 with NOS valves in is better than the 300b (IMHO), with Chinese 211's its not as good. Comparing to Simon's 45 driven 300b, its hard to say, I think I prefer the 45 driver, the 5687 is winder band though and I think has a bit more resolution in the lower freq ranges, so its a tough call.

Ed: The potting box is what AE use (its a AE mains TX under it), they may sell you them empty.

Hi Nick
Nice job Smile
So far, has all listening been with 300BXLS?
Do you plan to try it with the mesh plates? (TJs I presume?)

I did try it with the TJ's, not that much difference in sound, but I didn't get long to compare. They have gone to their new home now.

OK, thanks.
I think TJ mesh are about the best 300B I've heard, although that was in push-pull. I've never had the chance to compare TJ with the KR300BXLS, but I know the KRs are also very good. So I was interested to hear how you thought the two compared. It does make sense that they sounded similar.

Why's that Max? Probably very obvious, but not to me!

I've heard both tubes but in different amps at different times, never been able to compare them directly, and 'audio memory' is unreliable. But I thought they both sounded good, and my memory was that they both did the same things well (good extension of bass and treble, clean low distortion sound).
So my guess was just based on how I remember them each sounding, not on anything clever!

So Nick, how would you rate the Partridge transformers?
Do you know where they were sourced from?

My feelings were they were good but maybe not great. And certainly not cheap. Listening to them I wasn;t aware of anything that sounded like a shortcoming.

I would say about on a par with Sowter, but I would like a chance to build another pair using level 3 Onetics. If only to find is the amp was worth it.
