I haven't been in La Paz since about 1987 and I've certainly never cycled there - it's at an average of 12,000ft, set in a valley in the Altiplano to hide from the wind. That bike route starts on the edge of the Altiplano and drops to downtown. When we were there, admittedly a long time ago, La Paz was a shithole. It's above the AMS limit and new arrivals struggle for breath - we certainly did - being in a steep sided gorge, everything is on a slope and thus you move slowly and it's a struggle - the hostel we were in had oxygen on tap plus coca (cocaine) tea that certainly improved matters. After a few weeks we were fine, but it takes time.

Thus it's all the more impressive that they can do something like that with so little oxygen available. They must have acclimatised for a week or so else they'd be destroyed.

Fwiw, we got engaged on Sun Island (Isla del Sol) in the middle of Lake Titicaca, supposedly the place the original Incas descended from the heavens. To get to Sun Island you hire a local fishing boat from a small town just outside La Paz. Back then, almost noone went there.

Also, today is our 35th wedding anniversary!

Yeah, being aware of the altitude issues, I was super impressed with the effort he was putting in on the sections where he was pedalling, but even going down the steep bits your metabolism will be working hard so it must be exhaustng. imagine what it would be like riding back up to the start on the roads!

Megavalanche is quite well known these days. My friend from work did it 2 years ago, but not as fast as this. Check out the level of attrition on the first corner !

Epic! I saw an earlier one fairly recently, pretty sure it isn't the same one - can't remember the guy's name but it was the winning run, he was in front all the way. Those woods - cock it up and you're straight into a tree, or down an escarpment. And the helicopter is really annoying!
