Big chunk of More or Less (excellent program) on Radio 4 this morning was about Vitamin D and Covid19...

My favourite programme!
Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.

Great find, Nick - thanks. It's always a good listen, I've started going through it, pretty busy with work today, but will get there later.

I noticed in Morrisons yesterday there was no vitamin d on the shelf
The tube manual is quite like a telephone book. The number of it perfect. It is useful to make it possible to speak with a girl. But we can't see her beautiful face from the telephone number

Oh, well that must be a GOOD thing - as long as they can re-stock !
The 'more or less' item was a useful addition to the more mainstream exposure this is getting. It's a shame they didn't add that the 2017 review paper concluded that the infection rate was much more strongly reduced when comparing people with healthy D levels compared to those who were definitely deficient. Much more than the mean of 20% reduction. I'll have to go back to John Campbell's early March Vlog on that one to remind myself.

Good info too on the government's failure, still, to meet 100,000 tests/day.

Very disappointing. NHS England had some kind of similarly dispiriting and ignorant statement a few days ago.
"Should I sunbathe?
Although you cannot overdose on vitamin D through exposure to sunlight, strong sun burns skin so you need to balance making vitamin D with being safe in the sun. Take care to cover up or protect your skin with sunscreen to prevent burning and damage."

Ok, so this totally prevents you from making vitamin D through sunshine, as it blocks UV-B. Advice not based on science.
Certainly, you can argue that UK white people should not go to Africa and sunbathe, but really, what do they think the whole process of becoming whiter when humans migrated North was driven by ?

Watch this video, it's a really great summary of current knowledge, very engagingly presented :

Look particularly at the table and discussion presented from 5:32

Daily Mail (scummy rag that it is) late to the party as usual.

Bet you they claim they were the ones to get it widely used...

This recent video (10th June) from Dr John Cambell is interesting. He examines a press release from the French National Academy of Medicine and discusses amongst other things the modulating effect vit D has on the immune system - this 'modulation' seen to be somewhat lacking in many Covid patients.

Yes, saw that one - very good info.
Someone emailed me the Daily Mail headline this morning.
Also, even better ( though smaller font size ) the Telegraph has an encouraging article :

Here’s a really positive report on the use of Vit D to resist the dangers of COVID-19.

Yes, very good. The Spanish experiment that I linked to above ( starts about 6mins into the clip) was particularly notable because it was randomised study and proved that you could actually treat people coming into hospital ( with the active form of D, intravenously ) in a period of days, and have much better outcomes than without Vit D. This was despite all other drug-based treatments being available to both groups.

Suffice to say, I’ve been taking a Vit D supplement daily for well over a year. Seems very justified now. I am hyper conscious that I am a fat bastard using medication to reduce blood pressure and potentially moving towards type two diabetes, although not there yet. Nevertheless, I think I am vulnerable to COVID -19 especially as the wife continues her life as normal, so any lock down I self impose is always compromised by her unwillingness to join in.

So, doing the best to stay safe, regardless of what the government imposes, which is well short of what should happen. I take my personal guide from the scientists and read broadly on what they all say, recognising they don’t all agree. Thereafter, I take note of the scientists which for me seems to be the most logical.

The government advice/rules can take a walk. I listen to the scientists that know (I hope).
