Glad to hear that you're out-and-about again Ray.

Did you ever have a proper "bike fitting"? I've found that as we've got older, SWMBO & I need proper fitting bikes to prevent lower back pain, especially as like the others here, we like to cover some distance and often do so on consecutive days... (no recovery time). (I have an impacted lumbar disc that gets really gippy if not treated with respect)

It may be worth your while getting the bike & yourself checked out - adjusting simple things like seat position & handlebar stem reach/height can make a huge difference. More subtle changes, like looking at your pedals and the distribution of force from your feet can ease knee pain - SWMBO has tiny wedges in her shoes that keep the lines of force straight through her knees & hips (she had a motorbike accident years ago that damaged one knee).

An hour or so in a decent bike shop can improve matters greatly...

Glad to hear you've got your biking bug back Ray.

I've just been doing local-ish loops recentky , nothing major.

I've spent a lot of time working on my cranky ol Bullet recently, it's almost MOT able.

The Yorkshire edition is filled with ice ;)
As a bonus it makes a nice toast rack when you stop for a cuppa.

Did 50km at dawn on the Al Qudra track with friends. Averaged about 28km/h. Lovely start to day - saw Arabian Oryx and loads of other wildlife, including scorpions! Profile largely flat but with a few decent hills. Over 250km of tracks now in DUbai - they're aiming to have over 500km by 2021 - all the tracks are perfect for cycling and swept every day... 6AM is the preferred start time for bigger rides, before the sun gets up too much. The start/end of the bit we were on is called "Last Exit" and whilst in the middle of the desert, about 40km from the city proper, it has bike hire shops and some excellent brewed coffee plus a couple of first-rate burger vans, loos, showers etc... :) http://www.lastexit.ae/al-qudra/

's been a long time since ... so today, on my town bike, I cycled not 50 miles but ------------ 5. Yes five whole miles. I'm glad I did it. I ache and I don't like the cold but I can enjoy my coffee and croissant and feel okay.

Is this same Ivimey that did over 100 miles in one ride earlier this year?

Made the mistake of picking up the hire bike last weekend when still in my suit, so seat height was all wrong. First 10km was not comfortable at all.

Lots of good bike shops here - I normally use "Wolfi's" - http://wbs.ae/ - rented a very nice Cervelo carbon bike off them... but had to leave a GBP 3,500 deposit from my CC

When you hire a bike, they put your own pedals on etc. and the service is excellent. As they are closed on Fridays, you pick up Thursday and return Saturday but are only charged for one day's hire.

5.9 merciless miles to a cup of coffee and a fried egg sarnie. Glorious cold sunny day but will I feel like the journey home. Chores are waiting.
