Yes you have to use it at least once a year. Or maybe twice, can't remember exactly. It was in the conditions somewhere when I first signed up.

I didn't think Essexeth folk were allowed to use the crossing anymore? I though 'they' had to stay 'over there' *points to Essexth*

In days of yore, the clever folk in Kent owned a small bit of Essex on the Thames.

This was so they could control the river from both sides and tax everyone.

Veeeeeeeerrrrrryyyyyy cleeevvveerr ;)

But then they realised that not even being able to tax all traffic up and down the Thames and earning a fortune was worth the humiliation of having to wear a shell suit... or being that close to Essex...

As I don't intend to use it very often, I'm a bit loathe to open a pre paid account (minimum spend £10), and don't really want the hassle of remembering to go online every trip.

It would seem common sense to be able to register a credit/debit card and be billed for each trip, but (as far as I can see) that is not an option. Unless anyone knows differently ?
they still charging for that ffs?
when that bridge was being built they said once it's paid for we'll remove the tolls..
i used to hate going that way in london before that was built..blackwall tunnel only was hell

I began using it every few weeks during the changeover and was 'caught' not paying one way. I immediately opened an account, pleaded against the fine and eventually won. Now, I use it and the charge is deducted from the balance there. I've tried going further in and using the Blackwall tunnel, but it takes longer and traffic is often bad.

i made 2 crossing a few weeks back and suddenly remebered 4 days after that i hadn't paid!i went to pay on line and was told to enter the penalty charge reference number that would be arriving in the post.
when it arrived it stated that it was a warning and that if i paid the original fee in 14 days i wouldn't be fined.
sweet as!

I've just checked my Dartford crossing account, and my initial £10 deposit is still active. :D

My £10 has been held safely since the last message. :)

On the way to Gatwick the crossing was free ( 5 AM ) but on the way home yesterday we were charged, fair enough.

Today I get a message saying that as my account now has a balance of less than £10 the account is below the minimum threshold, and if the balance goes below £0 likely to be suspended . Does not say what happens if I do nothing.

My charge was only £1.67 and only the first since the new system started so I have a few crossings in hand.

Anyway I have now topped up the account so the balance is £10 +.

Since you mention it, went to check mine, over 30 quid :D

What circumstances might need me to use it now though I'm not sure.

Go straight to the bottom of the M11, pick up the A406, make your way South to the Woolich Ferry. Get a boat ride a free crossing and a few very enjoyable sights if your lucky. In April, I saw a Floatilla of Two and Three Masted Sailing Ships passing through
