Just been discussing this subject with Nick .
A search of AA brought up this thread, with input from Peter Qvortrup, it seems worth posting it here for reference .

The 300B amp Nick built for me runs 5687's, and been doing a bit of valve rolling and reckoned I've settled on Tung Sol JTL-5687 Black plate D-getters as the best sounding.
Actually, best sounding by quite a bit...was well worth experimenting with different types.

Tried other Tung-Sols...bronze plate, JTL's, non JTL's, WA's and the like.
Have a bunch of spares now, heh.
