There never was a Mk2 Frugel-Horn. Mk1 level 0, 1, 2A, 2B, 3
The new mark 3 does't really qualify as a true horn
Scott will have you on that. This same went on at diyAudio. FH Mk3 is a tapped horn using a trick that Scott pulled from an Olson horn patent (and a variant also used in the Klipschorn.

In actual fact, because of the trick the FH Mk3 is a horn to lower frequencies than the Mk 1 (which at the lowest frequency should be considered a "TL")

Scottmoose wrote:Why doesn't FH3 qualify as a true horn? A horn is a tube that expands toward the terminus.* FH3 is a tapped horn, viz. a horn where the driver is tapped into the expansion at x distance from the throat. It does have a choke inserted into the flare path per Olson to help provide a sharper upper corner frequency; it does not affect the cutoff / tuning frequency of the horn (which started as a hypex if you're interested).

*The length and expansion profile set the tuning frequency of a tube that is open at one end; the terminus cross sectional area determines the lowest frequency it will be impedance matched to.
Hi Scott
OK I accept your explanation Its is just to me a horn speaker is more a kina to frugal horn Mk1 or the large PA system I used to work with 16ft horns and these which I used as part of my disco bass units
So which version works best with the Fostex FE126N the Mark 1 or 2 could give me general run down as to why

You may get away with it with the additional rear-deflector from the Mk1, which is an option for the Mk3 too. Depends on how much LF gain you're after really, it varies depending on the driver employed. The 126 needs corner loading, the MA drivers are happy with a rear-boundary only. If the FE126En is the unit you want, it might be worth you considering something like Ron's A126, which is designed for rear-boundary, rather than corner loading.

Very very nice looking (speaker, not you!) there Colin.

I've always wanted to hear a pair of these like many others here. I went as far as the downloading all the plans for the all the Mk1 variations in prep to build them.....then along came the Sab's. Still tempted to build a pair of fully-complicated Mk1's with Supra-Doopra dog collar Baffle and bell's n whistles.

I've got a spare pair of P10 treated Blue coloured FE126's sitting in the cupboard... Hmmmm <rubs chin>

Next Owston is shaping up nicely innit :-)

Don't ya worry there our Phil. Mine burnt out years ago

Dave,

I think ya should build a pair the MK1 for Owsters comparison.
Your fettled P10 drivers are more suited to this design (I would say). As they would be test-beds and quite smallish floorstanders I'd be tempted (If I were you) to build them in 18mm MDF. :!: Burn the witch, I hear you say  But for my money and for less half the price a sheet of quality 18mm BBP, it'll be a cheap experiement.

The Mk1 cabs are very well braced and designed (I believe) for 15mm thick sheet material. So stiffness shouldn't be an issue. And in any case the Mk3's I'm presently building are from 18mm MDF cos I can't afford the price of 2-sheets BBP for this build. The veneer I've had for over 2-years and was just begging to be used.

Go for it our Davey boy. Now there's a challenge if ever I saw one.
