The phono 3 and related psu kits are still available from WD, combined price is £640.
I wouldn't blanch at paying that but the truth is in my current economic situation I simply cannot afford that amount of money.
If lots more work came in then I probably would buy them.
I was thinking more along the lines of a home made unit, using an off the shelf case, components and tag strip.
I found this - any good?

I've been told off once already for making fun at the price of WD products, bu-ut, judging from some various examples that have just so happened to pass through my hands a while ago it seems most of it goes into custom designed special cases, boards, front panels and wotnot, all quite costly to have made, so TBH the actual circuit itself can be done much more economically I'm sure.floppybootstomp wrote:The phono 3 and related psu kits are still available from WD, combined price is £640.

Super!floppybootstomp wrote:To take a different angle my non-Boron Nagaoka MP11 stylus arrived today from Mike's link. Pretty good, ordered Saturday, here today.
Fitted it and my initial impression was it's slightly better than the Shure 35C it replaced but there's not that much of a difference.
And then I played side one of Zappa's Hot Rats which you may or may not recall I thought sounded distinctly lacklustre.
The MP11 has brought it alive, now it has some sparkle, presence and better seperation.
If they both play back the recording with good accuracy, not sure if there's supposed to be that much differenceMy existing turntable setup is still not impressing me a great deal though, it's only a tad better than CD's and that depends on the quality of the vinyl pressing as well.

Ok, we have a plan.Ali Tait wrote:Aye,I figured that,s'why I suggested just getting the pcb's.You could then buy bits as and when you've spare cash.Much cheaper way of doing it.
It's only just become clear to me what several members were referring to in earlier posts. I think you guys are all so familiar with some products that you will refer to something like the 'WD Phono 2' and I will think to myself 'Wtf is that?'.
I am now going to start gathering parts, I may well have some knocking around already.
And will contact WD to see if they will sell PCB's seperately. Are they ok selling PCB's seperately? I would think they might get the 'ump at somebody taking a budget route rather than buy their complete kits.

Good point ~ not terribly helpful for novices.floppybootstomp wrote:It's only just become clear to me what several members were referring to in earlier posts. Gives me an idea, maybe a topic of simple links to other ATF topics discussing things like this might be useful?
For example

Could it be like have its own forum as well like 'Links' ? Or 'Index to links'. So things is easy to find. Like 'Stacks' should just be for useful info only, not discussions as such. So Colin's first topic would be 'WAD/WD phono projects' or whatever.
Would also like quick links to threads on this forum as well cos of keep losing track of things
