I had both these amps in for repair today and have never heard either before. [The Quad 405-2 is the later version with the SMD hybrids].
This evening I've had a couple of hours listening to both and I'm surprised how good the Roksan sounds, nice mid-range, controlled bass and good sound-stage. The Quad was a bit of a disappointment in comparison, it sounded a bit lifeless with no real depth to the sound-stage. The 405 was in standard form - the owner didn't want any upgrades, just a repair.
Has anyone heard the 405 with various tweaks that are common, such as removing the current limiting, different O/P transistors etc?

The 405 mods on Keith Snooks site brighten things up considerably from the standard cardboardy sound as i remember (it was a while ago)
