#1 Colin & Scott's clearance thread!

Post by Scottmoose »

Colin & I are having to have a bit of a clear-out as we've both run out of space to store speakers and drive units. Time to let a few go, sadly. Although better somebody else actually gets to use them.

First up, a bit of a classic. We have two pairs of very lightly used Mark Audio Alpair 10s (gold / copper colour) that need an appreciative new home. These are the original Mk1 version of the Alpair 10 which was in operating terms slightly different to the later models, using controlled flex of the cone (bending wave) as opposed to the controlled resonance of later designs. Slightly softer alloy with greater self-damping. Operationally they're in perfect condition; only just run in and in their original boxes. Cosmetically, other than a couple of pin-sized marks in the anodising of one or two cones which can't be seen from more than foot or so away, they're spot on. No cracks in the polymer frame and ready to go. I always liked this version of the Alpair 10; it's my personal favourite apart from the MAOP version with a slightly mellow balance. A nice sounding driver. We can sell the two pairs separately of course rather than all four together & are open to reasonable offers.

Next up, something else different: a pair of custom marKen / Fonken enclosures with dual Alpair 10 Generation 3s (current generation units). These are a unique custom speaker, they're the only pair in existence to the best of my knowledge. Designed by Dave Dlugos of Planet10. The marKen / Fonken design is not an Onken variation, or any of it's predecessors -they just look like them. They're actually an aperiodic / leaky sealed box variation, in this case using the friction of the high aspect ratio vents to provide the desired acoustic resistance. Colin's usual superb cabinetry; 18mm Finnish birch plywood, real oak veneer with an oil finish. I've heard them a couple of times and they're rather special, as they should be with four state of the art drivers and a cabinet that's -well, not exactly a simple build. ;) Easy to place thanks to the well-damped box alignment, wide horizontal dispersion, excellent midband & good top end. Friendly load for valve amps too as they're quite resistive / unreactive. The current generation Alpair 10.3 had more detail than the earlier units -rotten term; shorthand for having a cone with greater conversion efficiency. Doubling them up brings significant gains in dynamic range / headroom. In general that's not advisable with wideband drivers (not larger ones anyway) but the 10.3 has very good dispersion so you can do this sort of thing which wouldn't be possible with most others. A pair of speakers I'm going to be sorry to see go...

Asking £650.

A pair of slightly unusual standmounts using the latest generation Mark Audio Alpair 10.3 drive unit. The enclosure is one of my double-chamber reflex designs; not often seen but useful as it's tuned to two different frequencies, one roughly an octave above the other, providing slightly broader-band gain than a regular BR and tighter control over driver deflection. Enclosure is currently in unfinished 18mm Finnish birch plywood, with a nice pair of gold-plated binding posts. Nice single-driver standmount for smaller - medium spaces. Usual 10.3 traits; wide dispersion, lots of detail (lousy term, in this case shorthand for the cones having a very high conversion efficiency), good bass extension down to the mid 40Hz regions.

Asking for £225 -Colin can veneer for an additional charge (purely cost covering). The drivers have run-in hours only.

I should add, if anyone is interested in any of the items in this thread, please contact Colin; I am simply writing & posting these on his behalf.

1pr Peerless 830869 8in Nomex cone midbass / woofers. Can be surface or flush-mounted. Nice smooth response; easy to work with, & good bass extension. Suits a range of enclosure types so plenty of options. Data sheet is here: http://www.tymphany.com/peerless/driver ... il/?id=793 They have about 50 hours very light use only. New retail for this unit is about £70 apiece + shipping when new. Asking for £70 for the pair.

1 pair of Vifa's highly regarded H26TG-35-06 horn-loaded tweeters. High 95db 1m/w sensitivity, silk dome, very linear / smooth response, large decompression chambers & ferro-fluid damping, low distortion levels. Data sheet can be found here: http://www.falconacoustics.co.uk/vifa-h ... eeter.html Nice easy unit to work with. Like the Peerless, they've got about 50 hours light use only. A very nice horn tweeter indeed.

Asking for £35 for the pair.

1 pair of brand new in box Mark Audio Tweeter Number 3. These are quite rare: most production was done for Creative Sound so the drivers were labelled as the CSS ERT26. These have the MF logo and were sold under the Mark Fenlon name; not many pairs like this made it out into the wild. Small frame design so they take up little room on the baffle; it's a lively little thing -they make music nicely, are easy to work with & are ideal for an inexpensive bookshelf or similar.

Colin's asking for £25 for the pair. He also has a pair of the same with very light use (about 1 hour) and are in as-new condition (£20 for the pair).

Some more drivers:

We have eight Seas CA18RNX midbass units up for sale. Very light use, about 30 hours total. Excellent midbass driver; smooth extended bandwidth, well-balanced spec. so can produce decent bass output in a modest sized box. Usual Seas build quality; die-cast frame, ventilated spider, classic lightly coated paper cone, decent amount of linear travel and good distortion performance. Another unit that's very easy to work with & flexible enough to work in a variety of alignments.

These retail for just over £60 apiece normally; Colin's looking for £40 apiece, and of course can split; he's not trying to sell them as a job-lot.

Scott or Colin.

Would these work well with the Alpair 12P on a baffle ?

Phil,
For the money you can't really lose and I would say yes they should work fine with the A12P. Not as sophisticated a driver as the A12P which both Scott and I rate as one of the best currently available FR drivers. Both the #3 tweeter and A12P have a quoted SPL of 92dB so match well. My suggestion would be to use them as super tweeters (for want of a better word) at a XO frequency around 12kHz as they have an extended frequency response to 30kHz. I'm sure Scott may have other advise.
