#1 New family pet

Post by Paul Barker »

We've been after a Staffie for a few years. Lately my son made friends with a hospital registrar from going to the gym, and Sam looks after his English Bull Terrier 3 times a week. He has been mithering me to get a staffie.

Anyway we were perfectly happy to buy one from a legitimate breeder but a gas fitter I know from Hull told me about A rescue centre which takes dogs from the dog warden in hull, vertually all strays and mostly staffies.

I went over after I did a job in Brid, I liked the look of a brindle, but sam didn't like the look. Odd really because I recall in my childhood Staffies were more often than not brindles. Funny how fashions change.

anyway I took him with me today.

I am really pleased, my Sam took straight away to Navy, dog of the week. I didn't tell him they each get a turn at that position. But to be honest he was the best looking Staffie today.

Navy is stated as 18 months to two years. He is the one who could do a standing jump to the height of the cage. He is very strong. But the good thing is that my son is after a strong one.

He has been out on trial to a family and failed because of mouthing, which frightened the children.

We stayed long enough to experience that. It was nothing more than feeling for boundaries he leaves a dent but stops when he realises what he is feeling with his mouth. Neither of us were bothered by this, but we will be training him out of this behaviour. We feel he will subject to our authority very easily. We plan to my son and I will always be on hand to have control of him around other people until we train this out of him and then he will be fine with everyone.

Sam says that Zoe the English Bull terrier he looks after for a friend "is four times as strong" so to him Navy is not at all intimidating. But I can see why he wouldn't suit a family with children.

Sam and Navy

You will see Sam has good taste in music. That and Bob Marley.

Sam is straight away talking about a name change to Levi so far.

We have put a reserve on Navy.

One of the things Sam liked was he looks from top to toe like a pure staffie.

He was absolutly delighted with both of us and we thoroughly enjoyed his company. He never barked once. Was very confident in his own skin.

I have to do a little fencing in the garden and take my wife through so the centre can meet everyone and see us all interact with Navy. To make sure he doesn't bounce back again.

Me and Sam can't wait. We feel we have got the pride of the pack. Kenzy the Brindle I walked last time has been reserved already.

Here is what little information the centre give on him.

" Navy is a male staffie and is age between 18-24 months old. He came to us on the 01/05/14 as a stray brought in by the dog wardens but unfortunately was never clamed by his owner.
Navy did go out on trial but it was unsuccessful and has been returned to us we feel that navy can not live with young children and would be fine with teenagers 16+ as he can be boisterous as he is still only young and will need some training.
Navy as been dog tested and gets on great with other dogs male and female's has long has they are not overly boisterous.
Navy loves to have cuddles with the staff and he is the most loving and playful boy who loves his walks and his treats.
Training Navy should be easy as he knows his basic commands such as sit and gives his paws. Navy has been castrated. If you feel you can offer Navy a loving home please get in contact with us. "

Just about any bull cross will tend to be mouthy, you might get it reduced, but you will have done well to have stopped it. My dog (well, he decided that) is a bull cross lurcher pup (9 months), and he is all mouth, doesn't worry me, just need to make sure he doesn't do it to those that would not understand its just being friendly.

Well done on taking a rescue stafie, they are overrun with them. Great dogs with people, just need to make sure they are socialised and confidant with other dogs.

Nice addition to your family. I hope he fits in well.

Thanks Nick especially. I thought you best placed to know the answer. We could tell straight away it was due to enthusiastic fussing. He had a good lick of my ear also. As soon as we got him into the open area where you walk them Sam got hold of him and lifted up.He was very happy to let Sam do that. Then when Sam put him down he let us both tickle his tummy. He won us both over right there. He didn't bark at anyone or any dog. He is very confident in himself, the staff say he has been tested with other dogs, as long as they are confident too is fine with them.

Dianna is ever so pleased for Sam, she loves Sam so much she is very happy with the news. She hasn't ever had a dog though. But we don't think the mouthing will get in the way with her as he only does it when you open the door to having an excited Staffie fussing time. He seems to follow the humans leed on that. So he is not taking charge. But open the door to a good fuss and you have started at the top of a roller coaster.

They say as he was castrated only 2 months ago he will settle more over the next four months.

But Sam is the match for his boyish ness. That is the relationship he has with the English bull terrier, play fighting a lot. She likes to head but him with her big powerful bony head. A trait I believe.

I have a close builder friend in Scarborough with an Akita dog who he has very tight control of, yet he is a lovely dog he could take over if he had a weak owner. If we get any issues like that, which I doubt, I am sure Don would come and help us sort it.

It almost seems obligatory these days for rescue centres to demand you make a fenced off outside area. Because we are a distance away they will work from pictures. To me this is totally unnecessary. I suppose it is a restriction imposed on them by some authority who knows?. Seems to me an unnecessary obstacle to getting these dogs into normal family life. As long as a dog gets walks regularly it is better off with a new home surely?

So anyway next weeks project is to find some green wire fencing system to cut one side of the garden across to the house and a tall gate. Just to meet this condition. But we'll be taking him to the park for his holding. With doggy bag to hand if he goes on the way!

#11 Breaking the law?

Post by rowuk »

I am not sure about the UK, but elsewhere there are certain rules for using material on the web. Generally I do not cut and paste stuff that belongs to others. I only insert links to the original. If there is no 640X480 original, then I link what there is available. I will look for smaller versions in the future. Maybe there is a function in the forum software to resize the view of linked images?

640x480 sounds like a Blackberry........

Probably apple knowing Steve.
I missed the oversized image.

I doubt if our forum machine has the functionality you talk of. The issue is that Nick does this for us without charge. He is very busy, knowing what he has to do at home I don't know how he has the energy. So he can't spend a lot of time altering the forum engine or whatever they are called.

On topic again and linking with what i just said.

When I went to the refuge who have the strays of Hull, and see all the staff they have and volunteers. My admiration for Kay, s work with lurchers' has grown tenfold. When i have been there i have always known it is an enormous task. Nick has to help out in that work too.

I happen to think the way he lets the forum grow as an entity without interference from a super moderator seems to be as good as any. All forums are flawed, but i think the forceful single character moderated one's end up worse. (The fall out with the majority on other forums and started your own syndrome). This forum didn't start on the basis other forums are no good. The majority of originals were from a perfectly good forum. There were a couple of commercial reasons for the first concept of this forum the main one no longer relevant, but what started seemed to work and it has grown and evolved. Along the way we have lost a couple of great heads who spat their dummy's out irrevocably (to them) unnecessarily over a pathetically minor thing that blew out of all proportion in their own mind and nowhere else. I find it a huge shame when anyone with a perfectly good mind who has plenty of good things to share does that. The group here haven't been without fault becoming judge and jury over personalities and a pack action is instigated, which I don't take part in. However bad the individual may have seemed to them the pack attack is far worse. that behaviour seems to be settling down again.

But i don't think it is Nicks concern to intervene over image size. The individual complaint is enough. We usually show politeness to the request and all is fixed.

We've had "rescue centre" GSPs for the last 20 years - wonderful dogs - rescue centres are the way to go... also got a border/russell bitch - enormous fun.

Good luck with the staffie...
