I had a look through my valves earlier, amazing what one accumulates over the years. I have a pair of 5751s and 12AY7s so I can at least make a start with a Bugle.

I think 2 or 3mA ( will check )
"You can drive a 45 with a piece of wet string" ( as James used to say ).
If you apply the same slew-limiting conditions to get full HF at full power ( I think 50kHz is used ) you get the following numbers :
300B : 18mA
2A3 : 8mA
45 : 2.5mA

edit : 6SL7 typical : 250V anode, 2.3mA, ~0.6W diss.

Made some good progress with the cabinet this weekend in between guests. I'm really pleased how well the angles have worked out with just a circular saw. Patience and careful marking out paid off. It's tricky gluing it up though - can't just out a tin of paint on top to weight it down whilst the glue dries.

Ahh..the joys of wedges.

It'll be good when you've done it though :)

It's certainly unconventional. Just glad dad was here this weekend to help cut the wood down - 8 x 4 sheets aren't easy on your own.

Wot I do with 8x4 is to lay it down flat on some 4x4 fence posts I keep around for this, then cut with a hand held circular saw against a fence.
Set the saw so its a few Mil deeper than the thickness.
The fence is a 5 foot long piece of steel angle

The usual measure 83 times then cut applies.
Saves trying to manhandle the boards

But first you have to get your 8 x 4 sheet :-)

Summat like that ed, except it was B&Q cos I was too late for the timber yard. It's not BB but it's pretty good quality, not a void in any of the cuts.

I glued up the baffle this evening. Will be next week before I have the speaker terminals though.

I couldn't resist and had a trial fit last night. Almost invisible I'd say ;-)

But they work! And sound pretty good too. At the moment there's no lining or stuffing at all, and I might just have a play with lining as there's just a hint of boxyness (I don't generally like using stuffing - it robs the life from the music whenever I've compared). There again, having got used to OBs it's perhaps inevitable I hear something of the cabinet.

I tried them with a SE 2A3 amp and they were fine so I'm hopeful 45s will be okay.

Who's gonna be the 1st guest at Chez Simon's to say "Oi!...wots the boy-racer-sub-woofer doing on top of the fridge Spud?" :)

Are you going to paint them to match the walls? :)
I would line the bottoms and the vertical backs of the cabs. That should sort them nicely.

Steel plate would be even better, but then you'd need a crane to get the cabs up onto the fridge.

Good work.
I used a bit of light long-haired wool stuffing when I tried the 120 on the 30L box. Not enough to alter the box volume or do much to the mids - just to damp some of the HF modes.

You'll be building one next Dave, it's the future :-).

Thanks for the advice chaps. I'll start with some of Dave's carpet underlay on the bottom and see how it goes.
